Hublot, My first non-Rolex
I bought my DSSD not even a year ago. Wicked nice watch! However, it didn't quite scratch my itch. I found myself wanting something even larger, something far less conservative. I wanted something I wouldn't see elsewhere here in Birmingham, Alabama. After MUCH searching, I happened upon the Hublot Big Bang King Ice, ceramic and 48mm. I've obtained it from matthewbaininc.com in Miami, very attentive and easy to deal with. It arrives tomorrow morning. It's tricky picking a watch out online. I've never even seen an Hublot in person, much less a 48mm piece. I'm very excited! I think this may scratch the avant-garde itch I've had. Anyone else here have an affinity for such things? These are photos of the actual watch....

Don't expect much Hublot love around here...
Just my experience. And yes, I am wearing a Big Bang today. |

Cool look, not many can pull off 48mm but looks like you can! Enjoy! It's good to be different.

Thank you! I'm growing more and more fond of this watch every time I wear it. I just don't understand why so many are not fans of Hublot. I've worn a DSSD for the past year and it's a brilliant watch, but I love the far more radical look and build of the Hublot. I'm on disability and can't work and rarely if ever go out. Point being that I'm not wearing it to impress anyone. In my sheltered life nobody's opinion matters, only my own.

liquid360 - the arguments summarized are as follows:
1) poor man's AP. Copied from Genta's design. 2) over priced for the non-factory movements & value for brand 3) ugly 4) over hyped marketing machine 5) oversized - case is too big 6) huge hit on resale I will admit I bought mine second hand, so I didn't deal with the resale issue everyone keeps complaining about. And I'm rather partial to mine, so I don't care what others say. I don't wear watches for their approval. In summary. Wear what you want, because YOU want to, and not what anyone else says. |

Good luck with it. I went through the same thing and also bought a Hublot. A beast I will never see anyone wearing.

Hublot, My first non-Rolex
Yeah, mine also second hand. If argument is that these are all, each one, an argument against buying one as an "investment" which pretty much is inline with every single person buying a brand new NEW watch.
1) "Inspired" by a classic watch design as ALL watches are, without exception. 2) supply and demand. Buy 2nd hand and you're fine. 3) says them 4) seriously? So Rolex isn't a marketing machine selling mass produced watches? 5) relative to what? Fits me fine and the DSSD was too small 6) buy used I know these aren't your arguments, but general ones made in the world of ultra conservative watch snobs, but still felt I should respond 😉 I LOVE mine more and more daily. My Big Bang and I are totally in sync in our message. Quote:

Yes its unico in house movement. Flyback chronograph. I like the date skeleton. I can see the movement of the date. Haha

Congrats, can't even imagine a 48mm watch on my 6.9 wrists, in any case as you say the only thing that matters is your own opinion and tastes, not other people's, except if you buy a watch for others and not for you, which is something I am absolutely against, for me a watch should be bought only for you, hell only 1 friend knows about my passion for watches and when I see friends I usually don't wear one or just wear my old Omega seamaster I also had a taste difference with members here 1,5 years ago when I asked about a Blancpain L-Evolution, didn't feel a hate factor but definitely members said mostly they found it ugly, I didn't and got it, flipped it since but for anything in life buy what pleases you, not what pleases others, if you love it that's the only important thing, who cares what others think...

To be honest I find these quite cool, a little big for me but nice, of course I like the rather expensive models but they are really nice, about the quality of Hublot I don't really know if they make their complicated movements in house, have a partnership with another brand like RM has with AP for example, but in either case I find it quite remarkable that a brand with so little existence is making tourbillons and minute repeaters, I understand that their basic models have ETA movements but so does Panerai even if they are starting to go all in house...

Well said everyone! I've been very surprised at responses from what is really a Rolex Forum. I just read this on ABlogToWatch by Arial Adams. Really liked what was said....
"The turf wars are getting serious. This time I look at the battle on US soil between Swiss brands Audemars Piguet and Hublot. The heat between them has been on for a few years now. Behind the scenes the fight goes on all the time - with each trying to one up each other. It isn't a battle they publicly acknowledge, but the drama is interesting. Winner, loser? I think in a sense they both win because competition leads to better business and clever thinking. The funny thing is that in my opinion Audemars Piguet and Hublot have vastly different products. I don't even see them as direct competitors exactly. The real models that are in competition with one another are AP's Royal Oak Offshore collection and Hublot's Big Bang collection. I personally see these as being pretty different, but apparently enough people put them in the same basket. Call it the struggle of limited editions! For me the person who buys one watch isn't necessarily in the market for the other - but given the level of tension between the brands, the competition is real. In end, I think that having AP and Hublot always looking to one up another is a benefit for the consumer. This should mean that the products they release are exciting as possible."
