watch addiction to another level
I beleive most people here who own a high end watch could afford one easily or if not easily maybe after a few months of savings. But some on the other hand have to go a long way to get their timepiece or to fulfill there watch addiction. I just met a guy today, crazy about watches, who just sold his car to buy vintage Daytona.he doesn't have a car anymore since a couple of months and travels by public transport. His watch collection is probably worth more than he will ever save in his entire lifetime. I just can't get over it, what a guy and what a collection. Any such stories here? Or has anyone else come across such a person?

I think about selling my car...... and my house to buy more watches all the time!

A Daytona is a much better investment than a car.

It does sound extreme to sell a car for a Rolex. But 2 Rolexes in my collection are already worth a small car. So you can count me just as crazy, but I try not to think about it!

If he is happy, so am I. Who are we to say what the man spends his money on.

Well I go without things to buy watches but not things I need, just forfeit other luxuries for it
i.e. not upgrading the iPhone after 1 year means $1000 of watch money Like others said its about priorities obviously a car wasnt a necessity for this guy |

maybe sell my main car for a vintage piece then just use the Land Rover
then the appreciation may pay for the extra fuel consumption |

It has been discussed here time and time again that Rolex's shouldn't be looked at as an investment but they are at least as good as having money in the bank. I don't know what kind of car he had but the vintage Daytona might provide a better return in an equal amount of time. Different people different priorities suppose.

If you live in New York, I can see selling a car for a watch.
Here in Houston, not so much. |

If I could get by with no car, I would much rather have a watch. Sadly, though, this is not the case.

watch addiction to another level
One of the reasons I drive my Honda Accord is so I can buy watches. Plus, live by metro in DC and don't drive anyway. I remind my friends with Beemers that every time that have that $3,500 repair bill, that it's half the price of a Sub no-date;)

I've been saving for 18 months for the 3rd watch in my collection. It's had to compete with braces, new hard wood floors and furniture, and a new car for the wife but I'm very close to springing for it.
That said it will be worth it when I pull the trigger. I do ok but am by no means wealthy. But if buying an expensive watch makes me happy and doesn't hurt my family's finances... Than why not? |

I tend to dig and buy watches which suit my current lifestyle, which is the reason I have not gotten a DJII super jubilee, Daytona, or TT. I am not able to justify the purchase of a 100k watch over a Porsche/M6. Not until I own one first.. At least..

What works for others may not work for you or me in this case.

I hear you but I haven't seen many 'high end' watches on TRF.
I have seen a lot of Rolex watches though.

Selling a car is a bit extreme, but I have diverted a lot of my play money towards watches over the years.

I sold my 135i BMW and put basically 1/2 into my little Renault Clio RS200 and put the rest in a watch. Not only will the renault hold its value better, and suits where I live inner city, the watch I went on to sell for a profit.
I love cars but they do cost at least in Australia a lot to run and depreciate quickly. My watches don't. And best of all they can come in and sit on the couch with me.
