The New Day-Date 40

Rolex were kind enough to send over the new Day-Date 40 for me to have a good look at. Let me know your thoughts, you can read mine right here

Hi

My honest opinion is that the face is just plain tacky. That plus the fluted bezel and a heavy gold bracelet with PCLs makes it look vulgar.

A plain face would improve it somewhat.

Regards

Mick

This watch looks very fresh and modern! I like it but not enough to do yellow gold

Very nice. I am waiting on a call from my AD to see them. The YG/RG with that face looks very elegant and could be my favorite or maybe a ALS Lange 1. However, I did rather like the look of that 1956 6511 best of all...!!!

I saw this the other day in Switzerland -
At first I didn't register that it was the 40...it seemed to have similar look as the DD2.
wider bezel, thicker lugs.

I love the DD2 (won't be trading mine in for a 40) ... But I have to say I was surprised...

If not for the dial, I wouldn't have realized that it was a DD40 - the Dial is better in person...But overall not that much of an overhaul...(although new movement is always nice)

We just had an event at our AD, the white gold blue dial is very nice.

Very nice pics, esp love that wrist shot. Dials are intriguing, look forward to trying them on.

I am referring to that particular watch which has a very dramatic dial and is made of yellow gold. That is totally different from the two conservative models that you listed.

Mick

I'm sure I've seen DD's from the 1940s advertised? Anyway, look great.

Tacky and vulgar works for me

Still prefer the DDII though, perhaps because it's even more tasteless ; )

I think the DD40 has a lot going for it, but I'm not a great fan of that patterned dial.

That blue dial is nice... same pattern as the gold, I think.

The dials are great in person but I honestly think it still wears VERY big. I was in love with the pictures but in person I like the 36mm better. It's weird bec I have no prob with my 42mm Exp II which wears smaller to me but the DD 40 seems very big. I expected it to wear like a Sub, GMT or Daytona but it doesn't. I think that is bec the face is bigger as there is no "tool" bezel involved. The laser cut dials are very cool and the new bracelet is magnificent as is the new movement. I hope they transition that to the 36mm. I think I will pass on the DD 40. Thank you for your write up.

I'll stick with the icon; 36mm. I have 7 1/2 wrists and it still looks just right to me. My sport watches appear correct at 40mm.

Me too. Maybe it's the English-major-that-never-was in me, but I couldn't get past the opener. OP, do you have an editor? There's a lot that could be cleaned up in that write-up.

Different strokes for different folks. I supposed if we all liked the same thing there would not be any variety of watches on our wrists and we would all have the same thing. Not sure I want to live in a communist state where we all have identical watches.

I like this piece, and there are others I find vulgar.

gotta see it in person. the raw, unprocessed, unstaged photos i've seen make it look a lot more like the dd2 than the staged photos do

The wrist shot is indeed rather nice! As others have said, with different dials I would be so excited about this piece.
