Japanese Culture and Watches

Taking a contract with a Japanese firm and learning in general about the culture.

Also interested in the Japanese corporate watch culture - already thinking this is finally my excuse to buy a Grand Seiko but wondering how that would play?

Would it be considered a compliment? Or not really noticed one way or the other?

Japanese Culture and Watches

That's like saying if you work for an American corporation you should drive a ford. Wear whatever watch you want, to be honest. They're meant for our enjoyment, no one else's.

Depends on the company . . . . and with so many "foreign" car plants in the US, lot less of an issue than it was say back in the 80's or even 90's.

Agree watches are for us . . . . but details matter in a business setting and I am curious if this is a detail that matters in Japanese corporate culture.

(and looking for an excuse to buy a Grand Seiko)

If you're looking for an excuse to buy a Grand Seiko, any excuse will do.

I wouldn't be concerned about what anyone thinks of your watch.

We do have some members who live in Japan who might think differently.

Spent many years in Japan. Think it would be good to buy a GS only if you knew about the history.

Much like the folks who buy a Rolex just for the name and know nothing about the brand. It is okay, but it comes across different when you have a passion for watches and also knowledge of the brand history.

I would absolutely run with that excuse. It's better then the time I told my wife I had to buy a Black Bay because the way the bezel "Clunked" into place at the 12 o'clock position. Enjoy the GS!

Buy for the watch but keep in mind Rolex are big in Japan so I don't think it is a culture where you need to buy only form home companies....

One good tip is to just go to a Bic Camera store in Japan.
In the watch area you will find glass cases/counters with Seiko, GS, Omega , Invicta [!]and LOTS of Rolex models all without the usual AD hype. Just point it out to the salesperson and say "i'll take that one!." Don't bother to make a lower offer though.
I've never seen this anywhere else where I have travelled. 114060 and Exp 1 are positively cheap!
There were stocks of so many great models too. The only things missing were Blnr and Bluesy Subs ..conspicuous by their absence! Of course they were the models I was looking for!!

I live and work in Japan. None of my friends or co workers care what I am wearing on my wrist. I do see lots of Omega and Rolex here in the wild.

Going into a grey or an AD is a whole different story. They really know their stuff about watches. Generally speaking though WIS here as most all Japanese keep to themselves.
