GMT Master II --- Z and M Questions
Hello Everybody!
I'm searching for a GMT Master II and believe that if I'm able to get one at the pre-increase price, then I might as well go for the one that has the new 3186 movement. My question for the learned knowledge base that exists here is: Were there any "Z" GMT Master IIs built with the 3186 or were they all the older 3185? I could swear that I saw a post on here somewhere about that and the possibility that even some of the last Zs made had the new 3186 in them. Also, I've found one AD who is offering to chop about $500 off the pre-increase price of $5075 on a Z Series Coke GMT Master II. What do you think, should I jump on that one or wait to get the Pepsi M Series at $5075 with no discount off of that price? By the way, I would like to thank everyone on here who has posted technical specs, links to websites, etc.... In the past month, I have learned so much more about the GMT, Sub and Sea Dweller than I could have ever found on my own. This is a remarkable forum and I'm happy to have stumbled across it. Hopefully, I'll be able to post pics of my watch in the near future! One more question regarding Subs and Sea Dwellers: Are the current production models going away immediately following the release of the new ones, or are they going to be available concurrently for awhile? The reason I'm asking is that I've started to fall for the SD and the LV Sub as well. I just know that I'm going to have to have one of each. I know, even in the early stages, the sickness is fully developed and most likely incurable!!! |

I think there are some Z series (non ceramic bezel) GMT's with the 3186 movement.
I would look around and if you have to pay a little more for a 3186 movement (non ceramic) GMT.

GMT Z with 3186
I have read in some forums that a Z96 had a 3186 in it. I have also read that some Z8 GMTs had a 3186 movement and some had 3185 movements. Try doing the "Wiggle" test before you buy. Many posts state this is a good sign of a 3186 movement. ie when you move the hour hand the twenty-four hour hand doesn't "wiggle" in the 3186 movement.

Yeah!Do the Wiggle test!Accuracy 99.9%!I read it on other forums too, some Z8s were found to have the 3186 movements.I have brought my M350XXX coke to Singapore RSC and have them pop out the back case. And viola, there she is!I asked them why the 24 hours don't move at all when i adjust the hour hand. They told me its because of the new movement it is very precise, and they're independent machanism blablablaa..

GMT Master II
Yes I was told that Z97xxxx and after all have 3186 since Rolex did run out of the 3185 movement.
Personally I would jump on the pre increase price since some AD's are selling full price since it is getting scarce if you're looking for a brand new one. as for the SD, shipment may continue for another month or two I was told but only in small quantities. I love them both. No more SD after DeepSea becomes available. Don't know for sure about LV sub. But certainly will complement your SD.

Personally, I would go for the Z-series GMT II with black/burgundy bezel insert. I would not care too much about it having the Parachrom Bleu hair spring or not. Don't expect an M-series GMT II to be "better" due to it likely having the PB hair spring. The conventional hair spring is as good as the new one and tested by time.
As for the SD, it's my understanding that the last ones are leaving the manufactory as we write. My last got the last batch of SD's in recently and he told me he won't get any further.

Two local AD's told me they could give a better discount on GMT II (old style 16710) than on Sea Dwellers because they don't have to buy more GMT's after selling their existing stock but will have to buy more Sea Dwellers at the new post price increase price. The GMT's are still available now over a year after the introduction of the IIC and the announcement that it would be discontinued. My guess is that the Sea Dweller will still be in store's next year at this time. The Deap Sea probably won't even be available until Christmas if that early (again just my guess). One final thought. Don't believe anything AD's tell you. They don't get any special or reliable information.
I was in my local AD when the Rolex district sales rep was there. I asked him a whole bunch of questions about the Milgauss and Deep Sea availability and the GMT 16710 w/ 3186 movement and he said he honestly had no idea as to either. He told me Rolex USA plays it close to the vest even with their sales reps. Just my 2 cents. Marc |

Having the new manual does not mean it has a new movement. Mine has the new manual, normal II but 3185 movement.

Anybody who can get a GMT of any type with 500 bucks off of the pre-increase price should jump on it...
It doesn't matter what movement is in it........
