Icon8 Bummed :(

'Told my mom I'm getting a Rolex and she replied, "Why don't you just get a fake, no one's gonna think it's real anyway."
(Maybe because I'm a hairstylist and my husband's a phone man)
Does anyone else have to deal with these comments?

No, but I took my wife to dinner for her birthday a few nights ago and she looked closely at my Sea Dweller and said "What happened to your Tag Heuer"

If it's within your means, buy it if that's what you want. I am sure your relationlship with your mother will not be affected either way if you buy the Rolex. I have to say that there is a difference between Rolex lovers and the rest of the world.

Barbara, don't let that stop you! If you can afford the real deal, it's WORTH IT!

Don't worry about it... my parents think I'm out of my mind for all of my Rolex endeavors.

Tell your mom to join the forum.

After a while she'll have bought one herself and maybe another one for you.

Don't let your mom's comments bother you. If you can afford a genuine watch that you want wether it be a Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Timex, Casio, Seiko, Rado whatever, go and buy it. We only live once.

I agree. Budget to see if you can afford it. Save like heck. Roles are the best. It truly is worth it!

Welcome to TRF. You'll be wearing the watch and not that many people are going to notice based on many of the posts I've been reading. In any case, don't let the comments get you down. When you put that Rolex on your wrist, you are going to feel great.

John

You'd Know.........every time you looked at it..............

Better to have a real one and pass it off as a fake if you have to than the other way round!

Hi Barbara,

I know there are those that sing the praises of owning fake, high end merchandise (probably not on TRF, though). Did your husband give you an engagement ring when he proposed? If so, maybe ask your mom if he should have gotten you a cubic zirconia instead. After all, no one will know?!?

Them again, maybe she would say yes to that as well!

Welcome to TRF - we need more estrogen around here!

Welcome to TRF!

When you buy that Rolex, let your mother hold it in the hand and get a feel of its quality. She will then realize why you want a Rolex and therefore bought one.

Enjoy your stay here!

For my fellow married men - Wouldn't it have been great if we could have gone that route. Imagine what else we could have done with the $$$

I say if you can afford it - buy it. It is your money and your wrist - I would not wear a fake and would rather buy a real something that I could afford.

If it's not your mom's money--I would say, buy it! We (all) deserve to be happy, don't we? Be happy and buy it.

Don't be bummed Barb...she probably is just not into watches. Doesnt matter what she or other looking at the watch thinks. BTW, your mom is wrong...someone who knows Rolexes will know it's a fake...that's pretty embarassing.

Barbara, if you want a Rolex, then buy a Rolex. You will never be happy with any other substitute. Like above, would you buy a cubic zirconia ring versus having a real diamond. I know I wouldn't. When I bought my first diamond ring, I would have liked a bigger stone, but I didn't succumb to the temptation to go fake or cheap. I bought the best quality I could afford at the time and I never looked back. I still have it and have never been dissatisfied. The same goes for my Rolex. I only have one and I've never had any buyers remorse -- ever! I enjoy it every day and never get tired of it.

Welcome to TRF! Don't worry about your mom. My parents thought I was crazy when I bought my first Rolex about 20yrs ago. I think they came to realize in the long run the quality, durability & class Rolex represents.
GO FOR IT! You'll never regret it!

Do you have any credit card debt (the debt that you cannot pay off with the next payment). Yes? Then your mom is right.

Do you have a retirement plan that receives money from every pay check? No? Then your mom is right.

Do you have a rainy day checking account with enough money to cover expenses for three months if crap hits the fan? No? Then your mom is right.

The bottom line that you have to do is to ensure that your finances are on the right track. If they are and you like something, then why not get it?

Mothers are dangerous things. Mine was horrified when I suggested that she give me the money she and dad would have given me for a signet ring to celebrate my 40th (three years back) and I could have instead put it towards a Rolex. From her point of view £3K is a kitchen, a car, a great holiday, new carpets, a new cooker etc. etc. etc.

She forgot one thing. It's my money, my life, my choice. She knows I have it but so far has not said a thing.

Present yours with a fait acomplis. Go for it and enjoy!
