What do you think of the Explorer II?
Hi all - quite excited as I think I've found the Rolex I want, the Explorer II. I'm leaning more toward the white face, as I already have a black face Seiko Premier, but they both look pretty sweet to me.
It's almost like a mixture between a Yachtmaster and a GMT, both of which I've decided are my favourite Rolex lines. What do you guys think of this watch? And post pics if you own one. |

I wear one everyday and mine is the blanc version, the classic, the icon. Here's a picture of it with it's friend, the GMT-II...

There's just something about it, it looks bright, shiny and solid. Like something Superman might wear or something. I'm reading around this forum right now, and I didn't even realize it was somewhat of an 'enigma'.
I think looking at Subs, and GMT's so much on this forum has drawn me to want something a bit different, and I'm hoping this is it. |

A couple of months ago I went to a local AD to buy a white Explorer II. There one sat in the case between the black EXPII and the Sea Dweller Date.
The stunning black dial of the SDD unobscured by the Cyclops jumped out at me. (If only the SDD had a "fourth hand" and 24-hour bezel. ) Ultimately the black seduced me: Fr. John+ |

It's one of the Rolexes (along with the Sub.) that is still very much a utilitarian tool watch. What Rolex used to be all about in it's sports line.

It has the 3185 movement (thanks Lee!) based on the rugged, precise and proven 3135 movement.
I see my good friend wearing his white face Exp II all the time. He dresses well and the EXP II makes him look very sophisticated indeed. The red 24 hour hand is very saucy and adds just the right amount of dynamism and spice. Compared to the Sub, the EXP II has more contemporary looking broader shoulders on either side of the crown. I've had a fetish for rotating bezels since seeing James Bond's circular saw watch bezel as a child in Live and Let Die. So for me, the EXP II is disqualified as its bezel is fixed. If you find a rotating bezel to be an unnecessary complication and want a simple and sophisticated yet sporty watch, the EXP II is ideal. If you prefer a rotating bezel, the Rolesium Yachtmaster II has the same look as the EXP II , but with a somewhat cuter demeanour due to the maxi dial. The EXP II looks sleeker though. All the best |

Expy is by far the most comfortable Rolex out there. Just 39 mm and 126 grams, it sits flat on the wrist and is nice and sleek.
Very, elegant and sporty at the same time!!

If you decide to go with a new EXPII, be certain that it has the 3186 movement. If you are going to pay 2008 prices, get the latest movement.

Among Rolex watches I have a Submariner, Pepsi GMT II, explorer and white Explorer II. The Explorer II is my favorite and gets the most wrist time. It's probably the most comfortable on my wrist. Not everyone recogonizes it as a Rolex which I like a lot. For me it was a great purchase. No regrets on any of my Rolex watches. Good luck!

I love the white dial that complements the black sub which along with the explorer I wear the most. The white stands out more and if you get a sub or SD, you'll have more variety.

I think the white face Explorer II is extremely underrated, it's a fantastic watch. For me, it is my second favorite watch made, right behind the classic 14060M Sub.

Yeah, underrated and understated as I said. Imho, the Explorer II is one of the least recognisable Rolex models out there. I like it just for that.

I prefer the Explorer I to the II - but they are different watches - and frankly the I is just too small for my wrists. As to the II; I prefer the black face - seems more rare and more sporty IMHO.

Just so I know what I might be looking for: how many versions of the Explorer II are there? I noticed that one of them doesn't have the ROLEX EXPLORER repeated inside the bezel.
