Next: Patek 5980-1A vs ALS Dato Up/Down?
Have been planning on a Dato Up/Down and waiting to see the new gold vs platinum before pulling the trigger. Just ran across a near mint 5980-1A that looked and felt surprisingly good on my wrist. Already have a PP 5167R and an AP 15400 (black), so dont need another sport watch, but also have the PP 5070R and the ALS 1815 chrono, so dont really need another high end chrono either. But of course, need isnt really the issue - the question is whether to grab the 5980 now for the sporty side of the collection and put off the Dato for a while or just order a Dato and dont look back. I know prices are different but can do either, just not both (and stay happily married...).

Good problem to have Jeff!
Have you considered flipping the 1815 chrono and adding the RG up/down and SS 5980? |

Yes, though would probably wear for different purposes. 1815 chrono is my favorite under the radar watch for work. The RG up/down is definitely not an under the radar piece and would be worn outside of work (as would the 5980).

I would personally greatly prefer the up down to the 5980. |

That 5980 is a heck of a fine and versatile watch.

That said, I'm not sure that I would go with either Unless you are dead set of adding another chronograph to your already outstanding collection. I would look to add a completely different complication. And also consider expanding your choose of manufacturer. That said and again to echo Tom's words. What a great problem to have

Like both, but between the two 5980 gets the nod for me.

I have both the 5980/1A and the original Dato (not up /down). Gun to the head, I would take the Dato. But this is like asking me to choose between 2 really hot super models...

Wow now that's a tough one but I think I would take the Lange, love the big date and the movement is a work of art and I love to have a beautiful hand wound movement on a watch

But if to choose I would take the PP, now if you were talking old dato or even better Dato perpetual, then I would say ALS, but between the Up/Down and the Patek the Patek wins hands down... |

5980 has a better face but the Up Down has the beautiful behind, so are you a bum or face man?

I have other Pateks and one Lange-- timezone 1. I would go with the Lange here because it would diversify what i already own. The one caveat for me is how the datograph wears on the wrist. It is bigger and heavier and some of the German manufactured brands like Lange and GO are not as comfortable on my wrist.
