Authenticity and value check on 1972 oyster perpetual submariner

I have the opportunity to buy my first nice watch but I wanted to get the authenticity and current value checked since I'm new to this stuff. Here's a picture of anybody can help. Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it supposed to be/try to be a 5513 Rolex with a 93150 band. Does that help. Because I can't see any differences between my picture and the authentic ones I see online, but I'm also new to this.

The crown is oversized as well. Unproportional. i can already tell it's fake. Doesn't look to Rolex quality standards in general.

Are you really familiar with the 5513?

Could be a 1970s model with a much later service dial (and aftermarket insert).

OP, what is the serial number?

Here's a 100% real one (1980s) with service dial for reference.

Assuming for a moment that it is real, I would not recommend this as a first time 'nice watch'. It's in poor shape and you would almost certainly need to spend a few hundred getting it serviced.

The dial is not only "wrong" for the watch, should be a painted dial, not an applied white-gold surround dial. But this dial is a fake version of the latter.

The insert is a modern version too, but I doubt it's authenticity as it has a pearl that looks to be old. On a new replacement insert it should be white with a light hint of green from the luminova.

Hard to say about the case. We would need sharp pics of the area between the lugs, and once a watch has a fake dial and most likely fake insert, what's not to say the rest is of the same....

Maybe, but look at the fat white gold surrounds on the dial. IMHO tell-tale sign of a fake.

its in horrible shape I agree, and the fact i cant be sure about its authenticity is why im staying away from it. its a good friend but a typical "My grandpa gave me this" watch without papers or a box. Only reason I even considered it is because he was willing to take 600$ for it and when I took it into a levy jeweler I was told it was authentic but you can't really trust a random jeweler at a mall in savannah georgia.

The dial does indeed look to be a legitimate service dial. Furthermore, and this is not directed at any one poster, declaring a watch fake or non genuine without proper information is a reckless practice.

This is a Rolex service dial and is genuine. The original dial, based on the serial number, would have been a matte dial. It is rather unbelievable that there are so many "faux experts" here in the Watchout section these days.

To all the "experts" claiming this dial to be fake gives no credibility to your post here or future submissions.

If you're calling me an "faux expert" then so be it. However I still see too wide of a white gold surround for the hour markers on the dial the OP posted.

Also, how serious is a 600 dollar 5513?

And if it is genuine, there will soon be a hurdle for the OP in his inbox asking for his friends contact details.

Based on your other posts in this thread, then yes, you would be one of tbe indiclvuals that I was referring to in my post. Sorry, but there are way too many posts with incorrect info being made here. The price of the watch has nothing to do with this discussion.

I'd say we "faux experts" are a lot less of a problem than the obvious fake watch posts that happens from time to time (of which I've revealed a few) that members post "great watch congrats" while I doubt they even took time to have a look.

Oh well. Ultimately it will lead to a less active forum flora.

But still a problem. A few more "IMHO"s from those crying fake would have been appropriate throughout this thread.

Adam, I respect your opinion on it being a problem for the forum, so I will refrain from commenting on the watch-out section.

I wish that was not the case. I hope you continue to contribute, these discussions help throughout to bring other perspectives on how to address these issues. But we have to be willing to understand when we are wrong.

I, for one, my eye sight not the greatest - coupled with a poor monitor at home - I see things that do not appear normal but when I go to work and I have a state of the art monitor (no need for glasses) - may see it a tad differently.
