After a few weeks with the Explorer...

...ref. 14270 (36mm), I find it difficult to go back to wearing a Sub date LVc at 40mm. The 36mm is so light, comfortable and most of the time, I hardly notice that it's there (except for some occasional glances down on the dial). Here's a pic of it on my wrist.

Now I'm thinking about getting a 36mm DateJust to go with it. lol I guess I'm going backward (start with some bigger size dials and work my way toward the smaller ones). Has anyone else ever done the same?

Here are some pics just for size comparison.

I guess should feel lucky since I have small, flat wrists that can pull off the 36mm with no problem but I think that's the smallest I'll ever go.

36 mm looks just fine. i prefer the subs more but both are very nice. you may want to try out the 36 mm daydate as well.

Both are fantastic references and the addition of a Datejust would be a good move.

I started my Rolex collection with a Datejust and then went as high as 41mm, but now feel anything over 41mm is too large for me. Ideally, for me 36mm to 40mm is the ideal size.

Yeah, after my Nautilus, my once rather smallish Subc feels a little thick, it's all relative.

I also have the 214270 and feel the same way. The 36mm looks great on your wrist, just like my DJ, so it would make a good addition. I'm not a fan of the bigger watches, on my 7.25" wrist my max is 40mm.

Yes, I also am starting to wear much smaller sized watches. My wrist is 7.5" and I tried on the 39 mm Explorer I not even 1 year ago. No way it seemed too small for my taste, last Saturday same watch same size wrist and "Blam" it looked like it was meant just for my wrist. It has to be that my preferences are changing more towards the smaller sizes 39 mm to 41 mm. I will tell you one thing, once I get a 39 mm Explorer I, I will sometime later brave up to a 36 mm Explorer I. I like the 36 mm also.

Love that explorer. Looks great on your wrist! A modern 6 digit reference DJ will wear a bit larger than that explorer FYI.

Your story probably isn't common, it seems that most people prefer bigger watches these days. I don't think that watches are a 1 sized fits all item though. A 36mm DJ will look as proportional on a slender 6.75 inch wrist as a 41mm DJII on a pudgier 8 inch wrist.

I've done it... My first "nice" watch and second one as well was 44mm... then 42mm... then 40... then 36mm... I've offloaded the 44mm pieces. They are too big on me now... Big watches for me was a 20's thing.

Nice to see someone who appears to have a smaller size wrist not feel they need to wear a 44MM+ size, the explorer looks perfect for you.

Yup, I couldn't agree more... 36mm - 40mm IS the ideal size (well, at least for us). I used to own Breitling, Tag, Oris, etc and they were just too big for me.

Rob, glad to hear I'm not the only one. That's the reason why I'm holding out on an Explorer II 216570 Polar since it's 42mm.

Explorer lookss perfect on you.

what size is your wrist?

an wrist shots with the subc?

maybe the 16610LV would be a nice compromise?

Thanks and I thought my wrists were 6.5" but when I sent some watches to Thanh (Takuya) and he said his wrist is 6.5" and mine's probably smaller. My wife just measured my left wrist and it's 6 1/4".

Here's a shot of the LVc on my wrist.

Thanks Jack and at first, the 36mm is a real shocker when I first put it on (coming from Sub 40mm and Tudor 41mm). After awhile, I can't imagine putting on anything else that's bigger.

Nothing wrong with small watches. I wear one of mine, 35mm Nomos, and love it! The only reason why I still have a 42mm is because it is the Moon Speedy. Sold the Panerai and never looked back.

My first Rolex was my Sub which was recently joined by a 36mm Oyster Perpetual. Quite happy swapping between the two, but I expect my 14060 wears a little smaller than your Sub:

Explorer and Hulk. What a great one-two combo. Two iconic Rolex sports watches(Sub and Explorer). And a great way to have both without having two black sports watches. Of the two I can easily see why you'd prefer the explorer for everyday but the Hulk would be great for changing it up every now a than and it would be a bigger change than the SubC.

I don't know why I hadn't considered that combo before now but this thread has inspired what direction I want to take my final collection.

Congrats, the 14270 looks great on you! Don't worry, I've been there and know exactly how you feel. I think it's because the proportions of the 36mm case look perfect against the 20mm bracelets. To my eye anyway. Coming from various 40-42mm pieces over many years, my last two pieces were a 14270, which I wanted for many years, followed by a 36mm Datejust (my latest).

I personally think the 14270 is the best looking watch. Ever.

My only problem is, so does my wife, so she took it, lol.

I ended up getting a 36mm DJ to ease the blow. 😊

Thanks for the pic, James and your 36mm DJ does look bigger than the Explorer. Maybe it's the black dial that gives the illusion of being smaller.

Thanks Rob and good thing my wife isn't into watches (or maybe that's the bad thing lol). Also I totally agree with you about 14270 being the best looking watch.

Btw, love your 36mm DJ and that's the one I would buy. Been looking for one in good condition.
