Smart Watches...Tag is in, will Rolex join?!?

I was reading an article today in which Tag is preparing to launch a smart watch (http://techcrunch.com/2015/11/09/tag...#.3ijlaqm:9FHt).

Until recently, the smart watches have been reserved to the "tech" field (i.e. Apple, Samsung, etc.), but we are now seeing this trend progress to the timepiece arena. So, as timepieces and swiss watch companies evolve, who do you think will join and who will remain true to their roots? Will there ever be a Daytona with steps, calories burned, and distance disguised in the sub-dials? Does this strategy broaden the audience swiss watches need in order to remain competitive or is this an attempt by a swiss watch company to acquiesce to a trend?

Thoughts?

I think this is appropriate for Tag...they are a department store watch.

I think it looks nicer than the other options available... My major problem with these is its just as easy to pull my phone out and do exactly the same thing on a nice large screen.

What I want to see is some of that tech integrated in a nice band/strap. I could see a smart strap on a Patek Aquanaut and possibly on quite a few offerings from the Rolex sports line up.

The high end brands will stay away because they can't afford to sell there customers something that will be worthless in two years.

That would be very cool. It would definitely grab me, as I haven't bought a smart watch because I don't want to wear two separate watches (one pp/Rolex and one smart watch). Plus, you can swap out the strap once it's obsolete and get a new 2.0 smart strap.

I'd love to see a nice PAM smart buckle.. other than that I couldn't imaging paying $1500 for TAG name that has same tech as watches in the $300 range

I believe Rolex to be a middle tier timepiece, not a "department store" brand, but not a high end luxury brand either. Therefore, I can see some degree of technology making it's way into their production at some point in time. Although Tag is not the same tier as Rolex, there are other timepiece companies who have strayed from the original design and have experienced much success.

Rolex make quality timepieces, why would they get into this mickey-mouse territory.

Montblanc already has made this strap.

Rolex may be middle tier in the luxury watch market, but they're very high end in the smart watch market (in context of the $300 Samsung smart watch).

What amazing feature can Rolex offer to compete with a Samsung? Cold fusion maybe?

Probably not Rolex typically desires to operate as an independent company, at present this deviation in the market requires skills they currently don't have. Realistically entry into this arena would require a considerable investment or collaboration with someone else doubt that will happen. But we'll see.

looking at the way they follow certain hip trends (supercase etc) would not rule out a no

but hope it is a no nonetheless

I have a Tag golf watch. Worked for ~2 years, then battery went dead. Replacement batteries lasted 9 months, then ~7 months, then 5 months... now battery lasts ~3 months. I've pretty much been told that's just the it is.

Why would Rolex follow anything Tag does?

Rolex, I don't think so... now with the Tudor brand, I would not be surprised if they tried.

Maybe one day when the technology is more advanced. For now they'd have to do a JV with Apple (not likely) or live with Google's ugly ass design language and Samsung's consumer grade crap hardware. It would be an epic degradation of brand value for Rolex.

Smart devices will be in contact lenses one day in the not too distant future
The smart watch quickly obsoletes itself over a few years as memory increases and batteries change
Why would a timeless generational brand commit to something short lived?
