White powder appearing on watch crystal...?!
Has anyone had the same mystifying experience I have had, when using an auto watch winder? The watch was being turned, 1 hour in 3, for several hours overnight, when I heard a loud pop, and found the crystal face covered in a fine white powder. I cleaned it off, and no harm appears to have been done, the watch is working fine, as before.
Id be v interested to know what is this powder, and has it done any harm to the watch or internals? Also, would it have been down to the watch winder, ie. is it faulty; or would it be safe to carry on using it. Thanks for any useful info. |

Without a photo or knowing what was inside the winder it is impossible to help

I should have taken a photo at the time but not knowing if the powder was harmful to the watch, I just took it straight out and cleaned it off. The watch was a ladies Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date, circa '60s.

Yeah sounds like some chemical reaction to do with the popping of electronics. Something burned out.

How loud was the pop? Like bubble gum popping, champagne opening or louder? Also, curious what type of winder you were using? Was it plugged in, or batter operated, or plugged in with batteries also installed? Pics of the winder might help. |

White powder huh. Sounds suspicious. Any straws and razor blades nearby?
