Very cool, I wonder how many rolexs have been lost in the ocean. I was talking to a guy a few months back and he lost his date just body boarding and never found it.

How does that happen? Does the watch just break?

Happened to me last year.
I was in very, very rough surf, got smacked by a wave that took off my glasses and at the same time, knocked my watch off my wrist, never to be found.

In my case, I got enough of a short quick glimpse to think the pin popped.
It fell clean off my wrist, not as if taking it off normally.

Surf was so rough, life guard came in after me and wouldn't allow me to search for it or my glasses. Both lost.

From what he told me the clasp opened and it fell off. He told me that's why he now wears a sub. But from my experience surfing the ocean is very powerful, not sure I'd wear any watch while surfing even with the subs clasp

Yes, it's an old story now, but it's still a good one. I mean it's a sub....with a barnacle. What a fun story.

That's why he NOW wears a sub?

How does that remedy the problem of a SUB clasp opening up by NOW wearing a SUB?

Did I miss something?

I wondered that myself.

Nice story though. I remember reading about it back when. In fact there have been several stories about watches being lost in the sea only to be found later stilling working. Might keep those tales in mind the next time someone asks if it's ok to get their Sub wet.

I commented at the top of the thread that a guy i met lost his date just body boarding, so he bought a sub because it felt more secure on his wrist.

Rolex used to use stories like this in its advertising quite often, especially back in the 1950s when water resistance was still not very reliable in other brands.

Among several thrilling episodes, they featured included a watch dropped from a bridge into a river in Pakistan, and a watch lost overboard and in darkest Brazil.

Got me wondering - maybe a SubC with welded bars might be the answer... Anyone have this done? Aside from the obvious MilSpec.

I love these old Rolex adverts. Reminds me of going though all my granddad's old Nat Geos.
