Newbie - Deep Sea Sea Dweller or Subby Green Hulk
Hi guys.
Newbie here on the rolex forum so be nice. so I'm a bit of a watch collector and have amassed quite a nice collection of watches over the last two years.... Currently I have an interesting array of watches. Some being Panerai Luminor Flyback Hublot Aerofusion IWC Portuguese Yahct Club Omega Planet Ocean Chrono Breguet Tradition 7507 Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chrono Patek Phillipe Complication Annual Calendar 5205 A number of Cartiers, Bulgari and other odds and ends watches. Am currently on the hunt for a nice JLC, Rolex, AP ALS to add to the collection I figured no watch collector would be complete without a rolex in their collection. I had a disastrous foray into the world of buying Rolex and ended up buying a Rolex Datejust II 116334 with no research and very little thought It looked all lovely and shiny at my favourite watch shop... so i walked out with it and thought i'd be happy with it. 2 weeks later.... i came to the crashing realisation i hated it. I looked like a total wanker and decided it wasnt for me. So I sold it. Being pretty much a novice in the world of rolex, i took it to a second hand watch shop and they gave me 1/2 of what i paid for it retail. Burnt lessons learnt. I now want to dip my toes into the rolex world again and after much research have decided on the following two watches I have no shortlisted down to the Submariner Green Hulk or DeepSea Sea Dweller (Would love the deep blue james cameron one but they are ridiculously hard to source brand new) I can however get a Green Hulk or a DSSD pretty easy at the moment as one of the stores i buy all my watches at have a shipment and they have put them both on hold for me. I like big watches so the DSSD appeals. However I would like to try and buy a piece that is regarded but also quite sought after and treasured amongst the watch fanatics What should I be getting? Thoughts and why ? Which would hold value more and why ? what would you buy > |

thanks for that feedback. I'm generally very use to oversized watches.
My IWC Yacht Club is 45.5mm my Panerais are 44mm my Brietling Avenger Blackbird is 48mm so I am pretty use to super large watches. I just dont hear that the DSSD is as in demand or hot as the GMT II or the Daytona or Submariners... so im curious to hear what people thought |

The DSSD takes some time to get used to but is one of my favs. Try it on. I have the d-blue and feel if you can find one it will be exactly what you are looking for. Happy hunting.

None of those watches are really "hot", so just go with what you love, we don't have a hierarchy here.

None of those 2 are "easy" one is very colorful, the other one is a rather big chunk of 904L steel.
Both are nice, so try them both, sleep a night over it and go get the one you liked best the next day would be my advice.

Welcome
The DSSD D-blue sounds like it would fit your criteria.

good advice here, but man, I saw the word "subby" then I saw Padi comment right after... surprised you didn't jump on that Peter. I suppose it's not as bad as "rollie".
To OP, i own a 116610LV (Subby Hulk ;), and it's easily my favorite watch. I'd almost say you can't go wrong, except I will have to admit the green colors may not be for everyone. Definitely try to get hands on a few times before purchase. As for the DSSD, you absolutely must spend a lot of time with this watch before committing. It's definitely a higher risk and more likely candidate to repeat your incident with your DJ. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredible watch that I've admired and truly wanted for a long time, but it is a beast with strange balances and inflated proportions. IMO it's either for you, or not for you. Best of luck! |

Newbie - Deep Sea Sea Dweller or Subby Green Hulk
This :-
I wanted the D Blue also. Tried it on in goldsmiths & the dial size was fine but the thickness on the wrist was too big. It was catching on my shirt, jumper & I had to force clothes over it rather than them slip over as I'd like. Try them both on & the right one will pick you ..

It sounds like your heart is with the D-Blue...and it's the one coming closest to your criteria of being "sought after" and "treasured" that you mention in your post.
Ridiculously hard to source? Maybe...but so worth it. |

Based solely on the facts you stated, particularly that you are accustomed to wearing the larger watches already, I would go for the DSSD if I were in your shoes. Black is more versatile than green in my opinion when it comes to these watches.

As mentioned buy the one that sings to you. That said, if your goal is to add a Rolex that carries the history of exploration I'd echo the post for the D-Blue.

I have owned many Panerais both 44mm and 47mm....an IWC Big Pilot...and an assortment of other nice pieces, and recently set out to buy my first Rolex. For me, it was the DSSD that sung to me most....since I too enjoy larger pieces. BUT...I did try on the DSSD many times...and know people who own one, so I got a lot of great feedback and time with it that really helped me with my decision.
I would suggest you not rush and see which piece ultimately captures your attention more than any other. I personally could not own the Hulk....too much green for my tastes. I would suggest looking at the BLNR GMTII....that is one that I have on my radar. Good luck! RIDE |

i've been trying to source a D-Blue... but I just cant find one any where.. I will just keep an eye out for one for now... and just satisfy myself with a Green Sub.
My missus is sourcing a Green Sub for me. Her brother in HK owns a Rolex Boutique. just waiting for it to arrive. |

Put up a wrist pix of the Avenger and I will give you my opinion on the DSSD.
The other option is too green for me. Based on the collection you list I don't know why you are asking for our opinions?
