How to protect a shipment against "loss"?
I won an Auction for a 118206 from a well know German auction site. My package was "lost" by DHL ( I have won previous auctions from them and received my item with no issues). The auction house refunded my money without any issue. The questions I have now are how often does this happen and has it happened to anyone else? How do I protect myself against lost shipments when I decide to sell a piece out of my collection?
When shipping and insuring an item, do I have to state what's in the box i.e. platinum Rolex, or can I call it a scientific horological tool? |

you state the value of the package and the cost of the insurance is proportional to the potential amount they will have to pay out
doesn't matter what the item is unless maybe there is a reason it is higher risk say a breakable ornament

Established businesses that are known for shipping and receiving high priced items are easy targets. Insurance is built into their costs.
This is generally not an issue for the average citizen shipping out and receiving the occasional package. Insuring your package is personal preference and risk to take, but I would insure any item over $10,000. |

I have never lost a package inbound or outbound, using mostly USPS. I don't know how your package was labeled, but they should never said "Rolex watch, Panerai watch, Omega watch etc. as that attracts people to steal the package, perhaps even employees of the shipping courier. I read they should be labeled "precision instrument" instead.
If you are shipping an expensive watch getting it fully insured may be troublesome as most carriers have limits on expensive jewelry. Many people use private insurance by Parcel Pro, where the package is declared at a lower value yet full value insurance is achieved.

I work for one of the world's largest shipping companies and I can definitely say that if you are going to be shipping expensive watches and jewelry, third party insurance is definitely the way to go.
Companies like UPS & FedEx offer declared value but it is much different than insurance. Declared value requires that you prove the loss or damage was due to the shipping companies negligence. Insurance is just that, insurance to cover in case of any scenario where your item is lost or damaged. |

I have tried to get a Parcel Pro account as I want to ship odd number of watches, properly insured. Not being in the business I am unable to get an account - anyone aware of options for the trader / flipper?

Linesiders. You can certainly get a Parcel Pro account. You can't sign up on the website. You need to call and they will set one up. HIGHLY recommended service and they are fantastic.
