Blasphemy Incoming
I never thought I would do it, but I did. Just ordered an Apple Watch. WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT....... Now hear me out.
My Rolex is still going to be my everyday I'm not at work watch. Obviously this is due to the fact of fights, etc that happen on the job. However, the Apple Watch is something just a little different I will be using ON the job. From speaking to other cops, they seem to be pretty rugged, especially with some of the case options. Don't get me wrong, my G-Shock has been great. However, a perfect few examples of why the apple watch should work out just perfect for me. A) Suspect runs from the scene of a crime and I am called to run a track with K9. Well, I have been in several situations where you start tracking through backyards, neighborhoods, and you have a pretty good idea where you are exactly, but not the EXACT location. With the Apple watch I can just tell the watch to pull up maps. I technically will have an overhead GPS map of my location and can reposition the perimeter units to where I need them etc. B) I'll be honest, as technology grows we have 10,000 distractions in our cop car. Radar, Computer Dispatch System, Computer Messaging System (for BOLOs etc), Cameras running, phones ringing etc. With the amount of crap we wear and have to carry, it is not always easy to get to a ringing phone just to see who is calling our messaging. WELL, with the watch, it will be easier to just take a quick glimpse down at the watch to see who messaged or is calling to see if I need to pick up. ANDDDDDDD if I do need to pick up, I can answer from my watch and not have to hold a phone to my ear while typing notes on the computer, checking where other squad cars are etc. C) I wore a fit bit for a while, but hated the display as I wanted more info when I looked at the time: Date Temp etc. When working 3rd shift and you are technically working during the midnight day change, you often get very confused on what day it is. The Apple Watch will take care of more than what my FitBit did and then some. Often times with the fitbit, I still wore a Gshock. D) On K9 tracks I can set the watch up to track where I travel. This is helpful for my later report when it comes to "terrain encountered, direction traveled etc). E) Because I can? lol..... Ill be interested to see if it is all that is cracked up to be. Ill post pictures when I get. JUST REMEMBER, this thing will NOT be replacing the rolex as my "going out, I'm not working" watch.

I've been wearing my Seiko 6309-7290 on duty for years. The younger guys (they're all younger than me) seem to like G Shocks. Now that I think of it, one of the guys wears a smart watch, the face looks like a flat screen tv!!!

A watch is a tool, regardless of Rolex or smart-watch. Choose the tool that you like best and suits the uses you have for it.
A £50 espresso machine makes a good coffee and my £250 Delonghi only makes one a little better, but I like how the Delonghi works, how it looks and sounds and, to be perfectly honest, I just like their products. My Seiko quartz is at least as accurate as my 1603, and it looks damn good, but most of the time I now go for the Rolex by default. Good luck with the new watch - it sounds like a good choice for your profession. |

Lol. I just feel dirty doing it lol. I guess I'll be that much more excited to put the Rolex on when I get off work. lol.
Oh well it will be fun to see if I can utilize it as a TOOL, and not just a time telling watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

You could double wrist it. Rolex on one and Apple watch on the other. I've done that.

Obviously I love the Rolex more. Like I said it will just be a work "beater." Lol. Turns out when I get dispatched to a call, I have an app that will push the call to my watch. So if I'm not in my cruiser I can read the notes on it. Pretty cool. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Other than that, I'm an apple fan boy, but really not INCREDIBLY impressed yet. If I didn't have those "uses," I'd prefer to stick to the Gshock. Heck, I got it on sale. Actually only paid 250.... So what the hell. Why not.

Good luck with the Apple Watch! Please share your thoughts on it once you've had an opportunity to use it in the field and put it through its paces.

While I'm not a law enforcement officer, I can relate to your need/uses for the Apple Watch. I have been trying to come up with arguments as to why I need the watch. I have lost so far. In any event, congrats on your new watch and enjoy...

Seem like you've thought it out, but I'm curious as to why you didn't wait for the new version.
If we know one thing about Apple, it's that the second gen products are significantly more refined than first gen.

Because I didn't feel like paying 500$ for something that I may not be impressed with. A got a great deal on this one new so if it turns out I'm not happy with it, it's not AS MUCH money down the drain. If it turns out that I like it, then I may upgrade when 3rd generation comes out. Who knows. Already had to respond to another city with K9 and I will already say the map feature is great while I'm out with the dog. I also like how the dispatch notes are right on my watch no so I don't have to keep pulling my phone out of my Class C uniform top. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What a smart watch, that's crazy talk lol honestly you make a great point and I can see where it could be a valuable tool. I could see it being something that one day being issued by the departments. I know in the military the issue tablets in the field. Let us know how it works out. Be safe

More update:
Speaker phone feature: pointless while driving down the road. With out lightbars (the wind whooshing over them), spotlights, and the barking dog in the back, the feature is almost pointless. Pro: I've enjoyed looking down on a call at watch as phone doesn't ring (as not to sound rude) but wrist vibrates, just to see who is calling. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
