New Rolex Explorer to compliment my Sea Dweller 4000?
I'd always planned on a second watch to accompany my SD4K. I wear tool watches mostly and have an Omega Speedmaster Professional moonwatch I wear with a suit.
My AD says he can put me first on the list for the Explorer but what do you guys think? I always find the comments and info on this forum really helpful. I had been looking at an IWC Ingenieur as it is quirky and attracts me somehow but been drawn to the Explorer for quite a while and especially now the minute hand has been corrected (although thehour hand stem thickness bugs me a bit in comparison when looking at the minute hand thickness). Part of me thinks I need a dial colour that needs to be something other than black although to my eyes, black dials always provide great contrast and legibility combined with the right hands. Anyone else thinking of this or have the SD4K and any of the previous Explorers? Would like to hear your views. My SMP and this next watch will be left to my 2 daughters when they are older and have no plans to flip these. I have no other luxury watches due to recently downsizing my collection but may look at the Glashutte Senator 70s date chronograph if that helps. Thanks in advance. You're not going to be wearing them at the same time. Not sure you need to worry about complementing the other.
If you like the variety, I say get the other watch which looks different enough - but suits your style. |

Not sure of your budget but here's another good choice.

Great watch, I do like these but also want to have watches in mind I can leave my girls. Would many girls wear these due to he style/size? I'm beginning to think I'm asking too much from a watch

Rolex makes the YM in 35mm and 40mm versions. I've seen many a photo here of his and hers YM's. The question is can your girls pull off a 40mm? I think most women can.

So, we're in a similar situation. Hang on to what you've got, and save toward a PM model as an addition to the collection.

The new Explorer would be a nice addition, although 3 ss watches all with black dial might be a little monotonous IMO

If you are looking for another dial colour, what about the new IWC Mark XVIII silver dial?

What about a white DJ?
New explorer would compliment SD4000 very nicely too |

New Rolex Explorer to compliment my Sea Dweller 4000?
I owned an explorer 214270 and have a SD4K. I traded the explorer on TRF prior to acquiring my SD4K, but did own several other sports watches with black dials at the same time as the explorer.
The explorer didn't work for me, though it arguably served as a bit of a dress/sport crossover piece. I tend to gravitate towards black dialed sports watches. I currently own a SD4K, a SD 16600, Pepsi 16700, sub 14060m, and a GMTiiC 116713, among others, and have owned a number of similar pieces. My point is that for awhile I flipped pieces because I felt I needed to diversify or fill particular niches. Now, I figure I like the following: divers of various colors, black-dialed sports watches, and daytonas, and I tend to stick with what works for me rather than worrying about overlap. The explorer differs from the SD4K in many aspects, and if you dig it, I think there's room for both. |

Funny that have these thoughts. For years i've been undecive abouth the 36 and 39mm. The 36mm will fit my daughter better in the future, but the 39 fits me better.. With this new one, i hope she can pull of 39mm..😄 |

I think the revamped Exp would be a great addition.
I try to buy what I like best and not what best compliments the collection. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Have you considered a YMII?

Maybe I need to be comfortable with the fact I prefer sports watches and more so the black dialled ones rather than looking for contrast in a collection. By the way, the new YM with the brown face is calling out to me also. Thanks for your post. Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk |

I think the new Explorer they released at Basel will fit great with your SD4K and Speedy Pro. That would be a great 3 watch collection and my choice.
Only other suggestion as stated above is maybe consider a white dial watch. |

For dial legibility I'd go with an Explorer white face. If you want something a little more dressy, a date just or date just 2.

My own collection is mostly Subs SDs, GMTs etc (and Speedmaster) are all black face, so have thought from time to time of adding white face - maybe new Daytona as someone has mentioned? Would go well with your SD4000 and Speedmaster!

Consider adding an Explorer II 16570 (40mm), the Polar perhaps, with the 3186 movement (M-Series or later). I prefer that over an Explorer I due to the date and GMT functions.
