Vegan Barbecue...can't wait

anyone ever attend or host a 100% vegan barbecue deck party? we're talking no steak, hamburgers, chicken, ribs, bratwurst, hot dogs, salmon or shrimp...just organic plant material and/or derivatives like tofu.

not looking forward to this event although I have gone vegetarian for short periods of time (like 1-2 days) with no serious consequences. decades ago I recall attending a semi-similar event in Santa Cruz. the host was grilling seafood but some of the guests who were vegans brought their own tofu & after slathering it with barbecue sauce, tossed it on the Weber...their primary concern being that the tofu not come in contact with areas on the grill that had previously touched meat.

deep-fried carrot bacon is another item that will be prepared. those I've spoken to say it doesn't really taste like bacon...more like carrots. along with grilled Portobello mushrooms & veggie kabobs, boca-burgers will also be available...BFD.

unfortunately, corn is still out of season but a totally meatless barbecue seems almost un-American. animal rights activists will most likely disagree & perhaps they have a point when it comes to global ecology/economics/ethics. on the other hand, a 100% vegan diet sure leaves something to be desired.

Unless that BBQ is handing out $100 bills, I'd have to call in sick. Carrot bacon? Ish.

Give it a shot. I've never done the whole Vegan BBQ thing and couldn't get away from beef (My dad is a 6th gen butcher)

But I've had some rather tasty Vegan offerings.

Let us know how it goes! Open Mind!

Are beer and wine considered vegan? They are processed plant matter after all.

It might be fun. But, I'd go on a full stomach.

I don't get it. A vegan bbq sounds horrifying.

I've had tasted some pretty good vegetarian food but it's still not meat. The vegan or the even more extreme, raw vegan thing is torture to me.

I'm the odd man out......sounds good to me. I've been vegetarian for 20 years. OP you should try veggie grill in San Rafael. It will change your mind on good vegetarian food.

Sounds about as much fun as a heterosexual orgy with no women

Personally, I'd give it a body swerve and wash my hair or something.

I was a strict vegetarian for two years. Not a vegan, as I still ate mayonnaise and cheese. It changed my life. I lost 10 kilograms +/ about 22 pounds. I never felt better. I now slowly have begun eating a few animal products but not much. Body fat way down. Cholesterol, blood pressure, borderline gout threat from my doctor, gone. Blood sugar no longer just about to need insulin.

Keep an open mind.

It might be pretty good.

Vegetarian food cooked by people who know what they are doing is great. Not so much if cooked by hippies.

meanwhile on the vegan front...a colleague at work received a complaint from his homeowner's association after smoking/grilling some baby-back ribs this past weekend. apparently the new upstairs residents are devoted vegans & they complained about the meat-infused smoke. one even went to urgent care citing nausea & light-headedness. it was later diagnosed as a psychosomatic food allergy of sorts.

as a result, his homeowner's association will be holding a special meeting to establish barbecue timeframes & protocols for the upcoming summer months. with days getting longer, this going to be interesting and possibly constraining for those who like to entertain or simply 'Q' when the mood hits them.

That seems like an inherently antisocial behavior. I don' like meat, so you can't grill yours because I might be contaminated by the odors.

Is the association's charter so ill defined that a single complaint can change the quality of life for a whole community? (Apologize for the short hijack)
