Orange Hand "Freccione" Explorer II 1655 Evaluation Needed

Orange Hand "Freccione" Explorer II 1655 s/n 561xxxx

This is the first I've been offered and lacking experience with this model I thought it wise to ask for a critique...Does the dial look okay and is it consistent with the serial number range?

Observations are welcome and thanks for looking. Ed

5.6 mil serial would put it around 1978, and I've seen MK II dials in that range before, but I don't recall seeing that type of crown guard until the early 80's.

Hopefully some members with more experience can chime in.

Looks like an MKII dial and bezel, but I agree with the above that the crown guards look slightly odd. Maybe they were just polished differently during a service? Here's my 5.4 mil. 1655 for comparison.

If you're going to spend serious money - it would be worth an eval by a Rolex certified watchmaker.
First and foremost is the case as others have noted. I can't recall when Rolex began the practice of unique numbering for replaced cases for severely damaged ones. But it is possible this case wasn't born on the same time as the dial and movement.
Of course you can then have the movement reviewed for condition.
The other thing is to check is the backside of the dial for markings that the watchmaker would expect to find.

Why would I suggest this? Because there is more money now in "assembling" a vintage high market value piece than trying to make 10 replicas from alternative supplier sources.

Much luck in the acquisition - if all is correct then you will have a special "new to you" Rolex!
