Is it worth picking up a 2nd 16710?
Was thinking about the rise in value of the old GMT's. I have one that I bought in 2010 for $3,650 with box and papers, and seeing how much they're going for makes me pretty happy with my purchase.
I didn't buy the watch for value retention, as I have no intentions of ever selling and want to pass it on to my son. My question is do you think it's worth it now to get a 2nd one for safekeeping? Prices now are high, but not absurdly so that I wouldn't buy one to put away for 10 years and sell then. Thoughts? |

Are you a collector?
Are you investing in watches? Or are you someone who enjoys wearing them? Think about the collectible watches of old, they have more often been worn well and many years later have become collectible, I would just buy and enjoy what you would like to wear

I can't imagine having a duplicate piece simply for the sake of expected appreciation. I just enjoy wearing a nice watch.

Seems to me they are just rising in value.
The ones with a 3186 are going for crazy money.

I guess you're a momentum investor, rather than a value investor. I like to buy stocks that are undervalued. If I invested in watches (I don't), I suspect I would do the same. I'm not sure that you could call the 16710 undervalued at current prices. But what do I know?

fwiw, no, don't buy another. imop, the real buy right now is any day date in decent shape. its the most rolex for the money. good ones can be had for around $7k with patience and reasonable expectations; and when the asteroid hits, gold trumps ss and timezones for food and shelter. or, buy another gmt-- what do i know? |
