Acquiring vs owning.
This might be topic discussed before but I want to as my fellow TRF friends. What is more thrilling and enjoyable. Acquiring a watch. I.e. The hunt, the find, the negotiation, and finally receiving it. Or owning it outright and wearing it?

The hunt is interesting in the sense that you learn everything you need to know and establish what price to pay etc. However the best bet is actually wearing the thing, that is what it is all about. Regards Mick |

I have to admit that I probably experience more excitement during the acquisition phase...

The watches I'm interested in aren't particularly difficult to find. So the hunt isn't a big deal

The hunt is a heck of a lot of fun but nothing compares to actually having the watch on your wrist to admire each day...and occasionally to tell the time.

For me, this changed as my tastes changed.
When I first started collecting, I was very focused on vintage Seikos...automatic divers and chronos from the 60s and 70s. They were, at the time, very inexpensive, typically in the $200-$350 range. The hunt was everything and I found myself acquiring lots of pieces. Ultimately the collection rose to around 175 pieces. As my focus shifted towards Rolex, Omega, and Breitling, costs required that I be far more selective and focus on the pieces from each brand that I truly loved and wanted to wear/own. There is joy in both perspectives,... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

For me, it's owning...
For many, it's the hunt....which as why so many people are self described "flippers". |

With harder to find vintage pieces the hunt can be a tiresome but rewarding process. In the end owning and enjoying the piece is what's it's all about.

For me I thought both would be equally thrilling and rewarding. I spent months tracking down a mint unpolished box papers Gmt 16710 Pepsi. I finally found one at the right price and I was extatic! Once I bought it a month ago I rarely wear it lol! I'm nervous about scratching it up. I do however think that if I had gotten a 116710 I would wear it daily because it is an in production piece, and polishing it wouldn't be as big of a deal to me. Does anyone else feel this way?

Hunting is the icing on the cake, but owning is the cake.

Now I just want to enjoy the watches I have. when i first got into the watch hobby I was addicted to the buying/selling/trading part. I would buy things and think about flipping them when they were still in the mail and buy something else.
I'm thinking of just sticking with Rolex for awhile. They are getting expensive so slow down my acquiring quite a lot... |

The excitement is in the hunt but the satisfaction is in the owning/wearing

The hunt is more exciting than the owning of the watch. I can get a new watch tomorrow and right away ill be back on the forums looking for my next one. And im always trying to trade out my other watches.

For me the enjoyment is in the owning and wearing of my GMT Pepsi(#16710) every day. I had wanted the GMT Pepsi for over forty years before I finally had the funds to pick one up back in September 2007…..
But the best feeling I had was back in August of 2013 when to celebrate our 35th Wedding Anniversary we bought my Lady a Rolex Oyster Perpetual(#177200) that she likes and still wears everyday(which for her is a new record)!!!

I'm glad someone brought this topic up. I thought I was the only weird one that enjoys the hunt/chase
