SS Sub Date and SS GMT-IIC....Too Similar to Own Both?

Hi Guys/Gals,

I'd love to get your thoughts on whether having BOTH a stainless Submariner and stainless GMT-IIC is a bit redundant.

Of course, I realize the function of each varies, but in terms of aesthetics, are they a bit too similar to justify owning both....

I LOVE my sub to death and have always thought about a GMT but stopped short in the past as I thought the bezel colors were a bit 'colorful' for me and I wasn't mad about the smaller crown. I've definitely changed my mind about the new ceramic version though....WOW!

What do you think? Thanks in advance!

I do think they are similar. I recently bought a LV and thought damn, its a little to similar to my GMTc, so I sold it. Granted both are VERY different watches, but to me the simularity is not worth keeping both for me. I rather have a Milgauss and a Sub or GMTc than to have a GMTc and a Sub at the sametime.

but the sub is a classic and the GMTc is just and update version of it.

But hey you have 2 similar DJ!!

Karis,

Not IMHO. Besides the obvious diver vs. traveler distinction, the classic vs. supercase, brushed vs. polished centerlinks, and clasp differences make the two very diffenent pieces. Of course the difference in insert composition is a majoe visual difference. The Sub. with it's classic black insert is iconic. The GMT ceramic can take different hues from black to an almost pewter look depending on lighting.

Both is good.

I agree with Mike. At first glance to the unitiated maybe they appear too much alike. But for a true admitted 'She-WIS' I think you would enjoy the subtle differences.

They're two different watches. Both are great looking watches. I think my next Rolex is a GMT-IIC, go for it, Karis.

I agree Mike, the Sub and the GMT IIc's biggest similarity is that they are both Rolex and that is about it. Even the cyclops is different (AR).
They do have the same TripLock crown and now I am struggling.

Buy it - you won't regret the decision.

I'm afraid no DSSD for me....just too large and bulky for my taste (and wrist!)

I struggle with the same issue.

It depends on if you buy to collect or to wear...I still don't know which type of collector I am...

I thought that I collected to wear...but here I am with a sub-date SS and a GMT IIc...

I choose my watch of the day based on what I am wearing.

From a fashion perspective, there is no void that a Sub leaves that would be filled by a GMT. eg they both go (and go very well) with the same outfits...

Functionally, I love the GMT, and I have the GMT hand set to paris time right now looking forward to my next trip.

SO I think that if I had to, I would part ways with the sub, because its place on the roster is filled by the new GMT.

But I guess I must be a collector because I can't bring myself to part with the Sub...it's just too much of an Icon.

looking at your collection, I'd say you need a yellow gold, or a two-tone, or even a hot new DJ on leather....A GMT won't add much to what you have...

Sub and GMT IIc

For me they wear and look to similar on the wrist, If I were picking between each I would take the GMT IIc..

Thanks for your input!

I'd say I'm a wearer as opposed to a 'collector'....I certainly don't spend this much on a watch just to say I own one/have it sit in a box. I want to wear what I have and enjoy it.

I'm not a yellow gold or two-tone person so it's stainless for me...

I like Larry's idea about the TT. A little more distinction than your DJ and Sub. Try to buy a used one too, so in case it becomes your next Polar Expy2, you won't have taken as big a hit as if you bought it new.

It's not that similar.

The bezel is very different and the maxi dial and the extra green gmt hand gives the GMT a significantly differed look.

The old Black bezel GMT is more like a sub.

Hey, Karis, my friend.....ever thought of a mid-sized YM? I know you're not a flipper and that's a gorgeous watch with the superb 2235 calibre movement.

Karis.....in reality..2 watches are REDUNDANT!!!!

but......we're talking not just a watch...it's a Rolex...Therefore...there is NO redundancy here!!

There are members here that have different styles of the GMT II's..and others that have many different models of the classic subby....

My .02..........get what makes you happy!

ps: get em both!!

thought I'm the only one with this "problem"..

I'm also looking at getting either a TT sub or a TT GMTIIC at the end of the year or early next year.

was at an AD the other day and they had these 2 beauties side by side, and I was having a difficult time deciding on which one I want.

I do like the "cleaner" look of the sub dial, and I dont think I'd be using the GMT dual-time function even though I travel quite often - but I do like the bezel on the GMTIIC.

will see what happens....
