Rolex apparently replacing T-Rex hands on 214270s?
Just saw a thread on another forum stating that upon receiving his 214270 back from RSC he was pleasantly surprised to find they'd polished the watch AND installed a set of the new, larger hands (pic was also posted).
I'm far from knowledgeable enough to know if this is "par for the course" when Rolex updates a model like this, but if Rolex does plan to update the older hands on a complementary basis (as they apparently did for this chap), my hat's off to them. That's very interesting, if I still had my 214270 I'd send it in to get the longer hands. That changes everything!

The 3 6 9 with no lume would still bother me. First I've heard about this.

Can you link to the forum? Or post pictures? That's pretty interesting. I would get a 214270 if it could be upgraded with a service.

I didn't read any rules against it. It just said not to bring any disputes from other forums here.

Woah! That's awesome. It doesn't sound like he even asked, they just did it. It almost seems now as if Rolex is admitting that they made a mistake with the smaller hands. (I had no strong feelings one way or the other)

Hey, isn't the lume on the new Explorer different than the lume on the T-Rex handed Explorer. So if they changed the hands - wouldn't than look odd?

T rex
Haha! If RSC is replacing short hands on 39mm Explorers at no cost and for no functional purpose (damaged hand, etc), then it's hard to believe using 36mm hands on the 39mm was an intentional design decision |

T Rex is pretty funny, makes Batman seem tame.

Interesting, though I'm not sure how I'd feel about it keeping in mind they are effectively replacing parts on my piece with hands that are non-original to my watch.
It also seems a bit disingenuous when Rolex is so anal about any non-original parts that the consumer wants put on their watch, or that are on the watch when submitted for repair.

Hey, who used these hands that were in this draw?
I did for the new explorers. The new explorers are 39mm. Oh crap, what should we do? I won't tell if you won't... I'll bet no one will even notice. Let's go get a beer.

So now there are three possible versions of the 214270. Old, new and with service the old with new hands? It seems odd that they would routinely swap out the hands at service but not the dial and therefore be creating this third version. It would be nice to confirm whether the customer has to request the change or if it's done automatically.

Haha!
Even though T rex arms look short to us, I have never heard any theories that those arms were suboptimal for T rex, or resulted in their extinction or had some other competitive disadvantage. Snakes have no legs, kiwis have no (essentially) wings, etc, and do well in their ecological niches. On the other hand, the 36mm hands on the 39mm Explorer seems to be for Rolex suboptimal. Otherwise why would they use longer hands now? Or the RSC do such a thing? Guess there could be a mistake at the RSC. They damaged or lost the original 36mm hands and only had longer hands for replacement? Will be interesting to see if this happens again. |

I would be pissed if they did that to my watch. I prefer the symmetry of the current hands over the mismatched fat hour and daddy long leg minute hand on the new design.
Now this guy has a new hands on an old dial frankenwatch. |

in the past they have and I was not happy on several occasions...yes it is habitual on RSC part to do what works for them. But I do prefer the new hands and at the minimum they are each a bit larger and easier to read.

You got a point. But this does not rise to frankenwatch level. That would be blowing it out of proportions. But on the whole you are right. |

I think the length of the new hands better suits the watch but the mismatched width of the hour hand versus the minute hand ruins the 'upgrade'. It's why I won't buy the new Explorer. |
