Question About Buying From AD

If it matters, this is in reference to Wempe (and my first purchase). I found the watch I want and just out of curiosity, do they typically hold an inventory in the back or are the display models typically all they carry at a given time? While I suspect this varies widely on the popularity of the watch, among other things, I figure I'd ask.

This is mainly because If I do go tomorrow, I do not want to buy the display model because I see all the smudge marks all over it and while yes, I know they can clean it off, I guess it's an anal retentive thing? I would just want the watch I am paying thousands for to be literally brand new, untouched except by its creators. Not any random people who came in to touch it and mess with it, and for all I know its been banged around a bit while being handled.


Anyway...just thought I'd ask.

Entirely reasonable; you pay for a new watch, you want a new watch. Just ask them to get you a new sample; they may already have one in stock. It must have the seals intact.
Ex display is not new. It matters to some people...and you are one of them (I'm another).

My four have all come straight out of the shipping casket and were not display pieces. I'm too OCD to buy a display piece unless there was an incentive and I'm like that with most products I buy, especially shoes.

I understand your point and depending on the volume of lookers I have seen display models that do not look as if they are new. Save yourself some time and call and ask if they have the model you are looking for new without being on display. If so, go get it. If not, call another AD and find one that does. For an AD purchase you should get what you desire within reason, because you are paying for it. Look forward to seeing an incoming post.

I only buy my Rolex if still in the plastic transport box and stickers.

Stickers are a must but I prefer untouched and in its shipping coffin.

I will buy any watch if the price is right, don't care about stickers at all. New is new to me. I have tons of those coffin cases floating around and if it is a keeper it goes into my watch box and the papers in a seperate spot in the safe.

Very rare does an AD keep a PM in the back as they want them visible to sell. SS sport pieces will be at their discretion as the are solid sellers regardless.

Display in my book is not new, anything else you buy the display model always has a discount to make up for it being not new typically. I am a bit anal also, but I would want a new one that doesn't have case wear on it from 100's of people touching it, if it still had all the protective stickers and bezel cover on it and they did not have one out back, I would probably still buy it if there was no obvious damage on it, but would always prefer an untouched one for the price.

Good luck and advanced congrats! They are great to do business with and being a Jersey resident have enjoyed the benefit of the nearly 9% tax savings.

Oh and they pulled a fresh Milgauss for me last July from the back

As stated display is not new who knows how many hands it has gone through not to mention bumped dropped scuffed so for that reason a deal needs to be made how good of a deal is up to you

I always ask for a piece from the safe, if they have one great if not another bargaining chip for me as I actually don't give a crap

Purchased from Wempe last week. Insisted on -- and received -- a brand-new piece from the vault. ID'd it at the NY store, then had it shipped to me. Arrived quickly and with full Rolex protective materials. Wempe has always been very good to deal with in my experience.

When I buy ANY new product, if the only option is the display item, I ask for a discount. If the answer is negative, I walk.

New means no one else has ever even tried it on, in my opinion. Protective plastics are a must for me. Shipping coffin is nice, but not required.

Doesn't bother me, if it is in the window or not, it's still new. So long as there is no marks on it. I have tried watches on before, 4 or 5 in one sitting at an AD, I don't regard them all as "not new" because I have tried them on.

Wempe I have found to be the most careful in handling their watches, they usually wear gloves, often close the clasp on my wrist themselves and always have a coronary when I put two watches on my wrist at once to compare. I would buy display from them but for a good extra discount.

I am in the same boat with the ones preferring their watch being untouched when buying new. This is why I was pleased that my dealer didn't have it in stock and basically I am getting the one they had just ordered for their stock. Now I think I'll psycho them a little, by asking them not to pull it out from the shipping box until the actual moment of delivery

I'll buy out of the display. It's easy enough to inspect the watch. You wouldn't expect your diamond earrings to be direct from De Beers. Most ADs seem to be extremely careful with the display model.

Dealers are careful with the display models, wearing gloves and so on when handling them, but potential customers can handle them freely
