An Inheritance Story

Happy Sunday everyone,

I'm relatively new to TRF and the Rolex fan club, but hey, better late than never! I recently came into possession of my first new (old) Rolex and wanted to share my new favorite, and the little I know about it, with all of you.

A few years ago my dad told me that he thought he had his grandfather's Rolex laying around somewhere. I was a little concerned that we had a vintage Rolex that was just "around somewhere," but after a year or two my dad was eventually able to locate the piece. The watch was originally owned by my great-grandfather, Harry "Klingy" Klinghoffer (of Philadelphia's Klinghoffer's Carpets, if there are any carpet aficionados on TRF). As far as I can gather, Klingy acquired his watch in the 1940s and wore it for a good 30 to 40 years. It has most likely sat in a drawer since the 1980s.

Since December, the watch has made a roundtrip voyage to Switzerland where it received a full overhaul from Rolex. They did confirm its authenticity, and I am happy to say that it runs incredibly well and is probably more accurate than any other watch I've ever worn. My dad was kind enough to gift me the watch as an early wedding present. I absolutely plan to wear it day of!

But anyway...time for some details! It is a hand-wound piece, reference 8094 and caliber 700. But sadly, that is all I know for sure. As everyone here knows far more about watches than I do, I welcome - and hope for - any knowledge anyone may be able to impart

Picture time (I apologize if they are rotated at an other-than-normal viewing angle):

Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding
That is one nice looking watch and looks to be a decent size, unless you have the wrists of a 3 year old.

Welcome to the forum...I am not usually a fan of square / rectangular watches but I have to say that watch is a real stunner! You are very fortunate to have such a beautiful rememberance of your grandfather...wear it in good health

Nice watch! My favorite watch is my father's Omega Seamaster, a wedding gift from my mother to my father.

An Inheritance Story

Welcome
Congrats x4....
Your inherited Rolex
Having it restored
Your upcoming nuptials
And...what was that 4th one?
Oh, coming to TRF!

Excellent watch for your heir to pass down the generations to come.

I can not give you a great many details, but that period was one where Rolex was seeking its fortune against a great many brands. So they tried several approaches until the Sports line and DJs carried the day.

After the elongated "Prince" tanks were eclipsed style-wise, the square ones began to emerge.

Here's a brief history of dials and styles hosted by Interwatch that will get you started on your quest.

Thanks for the interest and congratulations! I'm off to an appraiser mid-July to hopefully gather some further details on the watch, and I'll be sure to update.
