When do you gift a Rolex to your kids?

I am getting ready to sell off part of my Rolex collection. I have set aside a ss gmt and a ss sub, one for each boy. One in 12 and one is 16.
Should I give them as high school graduation presents or wait for University graduation.
My gut thinks that high school is to young.
What do you think?

University graduation is the best answer. Especially if you are planning to pay for your childs university education. That is enough of a gift in itself. I told my parents I did not want anything for high school graduation. I was very happy they decided to help me with my first university degree and that was more than enough of a gift. I was also better mentally prepared / responsible enough to own a nice watch by the time I finished my first degree.

Had a lot of friends gift them at the HS grad stage. Guess it would be a personal call as you would know the boys best:)

University graduation. I might wait until my kids get a job and learn to appreciate things they buy from their own hard earned money. I know I really learned the value of money after I graduated college got a good job and lived on my own.

If it's from my collection? When I'm dead they can have them!

I just gave my daughter a quartz Omega AT for her HS graduation, obviously not as expensive as a Rolex. Probably would give her a Rolex when she graduates from University.

Not high school. At that point you cant really even know if the appreciate horology. They will just think it is a nice watch. College grad at the earliest, but maybe even grad school graduation. Another nice time would be at his wedding.

When you think they're ready for it. Maybe it's not a grad gift at all..

When the kid has the machurity to wear and take care and appreciate a watch that costs as much as a rolex. That for some may be never.

I would think that graduation from high school is not a significant enough milestone to warrant such a gift, however only you know about the effort your child placed in to trying to achieve that goal. The reality is that college is not for everyone but some type of training or effort is necessary to become successful in this world so save your gifts until you believe their hard work warrants such a reward. It will mean a lot to each of you.

Depends on the maturity/personality of the child IMHO some care for their items well others do not and need more time to mature

I wouldn't have deserved one after High School. Probably wouldn't of been able to take care of it. I'd wait until later.

If you are going to gift a Rolex it should be for something special. If you are breathing you can graduate from HS. Shouldn't get a Rolex for breathing. My parents gave me a new Datejust when I graduated college with a EE degree. It was not an easy thing and my parents were not rich and I knew they probably borrowed money to buy it for me. So those two things made me cherish that watch for many years. Because I earned it, and they sacrificed for it. I still have the watch but don't wear it and will never sell it.

If your kids aren't going to buy it for themselves, at least make them earn it for themselves.

I'm going to leave them to my boys in my will.

They're teens and they don't wear watches, if I gave them to them upon graduating high school they'd put them in a drawer and maybe wear them on holidays just to please me, they'd resent it, and I don't want that, don't want them to view a wristwatch in a negative light. But when I'm gone and they're gifted to them they'll appreciate my Rolexes because of their connection to me and they'll treasure them and never take them off.

i bought my son a Tag when he graduated high school and he has since destroyed that... so now no chance for a rolex...
He laughed and said he'll get mine eventually...... cheeky little bugger, so i told him im getting buried with mine so if he wants them he better buy a shovel.

Your gut is right.

Wait until after college...and see if they have any interest in wearing a watch at all.

No set date nor time frame. I'll just know. He's a great kid.

Maybe this helps a little...

Life is too short and unpredictable. Give it to them at high school graduation. More time for them to enjoy it and more time for you to enjoy watching them enjoy it.

Mine were easy - 2 boys getting advanced degrees, so one got his celebrating PhD degree the other will get his as gift for his Vet School graduation. IMO high school way too early for many reasons even for the best of kids, so I'd say college graduation is best earliest time for most kids.
