Jubillee to Dressy for A Daily
Hi all, I have really been digging my 16014 (pics below) that I have been using as a suit watch, and as a bit of a daily wear. I am coming back to the comfort of this model and its smaller classic size. My wife thinks that in casual wear (ie collared golf shirt, shorts) it looks ok but a little too dressy. Still works but would prefer I wear my 114060 or 116613lb. While I love my subs and they will always be worn, I am toying with going with a modern 116234, sliver dial, fluted bezel, stick, on an oyster bracelet for a daily wear. The thicker lugs and case of the six digit reference plus the oyster bracelet would really tilt this towards a more sporty watch. This of course would mean flipping my 16014 which is a cool piece and works excellent in a suit environment. I think the 116234 would work well in a suit environment as well, but nothing beats the looks of the jubilee dressed up, IMO
Part of me thinks I would be nuts to let the 16014 go, but I really want to try the 116234 as more of a daily. What do you guys think? |

Absolutely not. All Rolex professional models are essentially sport models. Some are just a little dressier than others. You have the most versatile watch ever made.

NO! That's the classic mistake that Datejust owners make; they think that putting it on an Oyster bracelet makes it into a "Sporty" watch. It doesn't. It just looks wrong. Take it from someone who owns the most Sporty DJ ever made, Turn-O-Graph, all that red on the dial, that red seconds hand, that red datewheel, it doesn't make it any more Sporty because the case of the watch is as polished as a mirror, the bezel of the watch refracts light like the 4th of July, the sapphire crystal is shiny, the dial is shiny, the markers are shiny, the hands are shiny, it's an explosion of light, it's even more of a Dress watch than the somewhat subdued 16014 you have now, the polished case being the biggest differentiator. Datejust's with faceted bezels NEED a Jubilee bracelet, period. Datejust's with smooth bezels can get away with an Oyster bracelet, but still look better on Jubilee. Embrace the Dress watch or avoid the Dress watch. You can't make it into something it isn't. You've got a beautiful example now, you'll screw it up royally if you go towards the modern variant expecting it to be more Sporty when it's design is more Dressy. I fought my TOG for a decade, I wanted it to be a different kind of Sport watch. Only when I realized it was a Dress watch and only a Dress watch did I start wearing it correctly and appreciating it for what it is. |

I admit that the fluted bezel gives it a dressy vibe, but you would be kicking yourself later for letting this piece go. Definitely a daily, regardless of what you're wearing.

I wear my 116200 on jubilee (with smooth bezel) with everything from a dress suit to a bathing suit. I love how versatile it is. I never feel over-dressed because of the jubilee.

That's a great watch. It definitely not too dressy for casual clothes.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think you have all confirmed what I originally thought, which is I would be crazy to let my current model go. Thanks again, wearing it casual now and enjoying every minute!

if you buy a DJ without a jubilee band and a fluted bezel IDK why you bought a DJ!!
Also I wear my TT everrose DJ 24x7 with shorts and a polo all the time. Though I sometimes take it off when in gym shorts and t shirt. |

Whew, another life saved. Good decision. You would have been replacing a moderately dressy Rolex for an extremely dressy Rolex, you wouldn't have been happy. Now, if you're still itching for a fresh watch, looking for something a bit smaller than your Sub's, less bulky, and on an Oyster bracelet, something that's great for dress occasions and still sporty, well, there's an obvious answer. The Explorer was built for just such a need, same size as a DJ, the Oyster bracelet was just made for it, the smooth bezel and white gold dial markers give it the right amount of bling (new 2016 model above). Bonus points if you go for a vintage model since you've yet to really dabble in that genre (my 1960 below). |

But when you start to build a Rolex collection and you realize that each watch was designed for a specific purpose or event, you start to view them differently. If all I owned was a single Rolex, and it was a Datejust, I'd wear it everywhere and with everything. I'd say that it was a classic and it is all stainless steel and silver and it works no differently than a steel wedding ring or belt buckle. But once you own a Submariner and an Explorer and a few Datejust's you begin to realize where each one belongs. Some work on a boat, some don't. Some work on casual Friday's, some don't. Some belong at a black tie event, some don't. It's a phenomenon that one-watch owners can't understand until they have the type of diversity which points them in the right direction. |

Jubillee to Dressy for A Daily
As pointed by speedolex the flutted bezel goes better with the jubilee bracelet than with the Oyster bracelet. However, if you like the 16014 and want a more sporty look, why don't you consider buying an Oyster bracelet and wear it occasionally on it rather than selling it to buy another Datejust? For your reference, here is how my TOG looks on jubilee and on Oyster:
Quite different looks on the same watch, so a swap of bracelet might be all you need!

Jubillee to Dressy for A Daily

Your DJ is 100% not too dressy for a daily. First, most old school dress rules are out the window. If you were seriously trying to follow them, your DJ would be a terrible choice for a dress watch, even with the jubilee bracelet. You would want to choose something very thin, no date, plain face and with a leather strap. This automatically puts it in a more casual watch category. Old school rules aside, your DJ is extremely versatile and can fit the bill for almost any occasion. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

No, I don't think it's too dressy at all. Good look with casual clothing, IMO. Classic actually. I'm more of an oyster guy, but I see tons of the jubilee around, and I'm always impressed when I see one.
My dentist has had one for years, and it always gives me something to look forward to when I have an appointment. Now, if you're just wanting something different, nothing wrong with that. |
