Changing Tastes
Chaps
I purchased my first Rolex two and a half years ago which was a 39mm Explorer. I bought this it because of its understated appearance and it is a wear anytime with anything watch. I expected to be a one watch man as the Explorer ticked all the boxes. I suppose, if I am honest, I am an exceptionally dull person as I have worn a suit every day up until my retirement and I did all the things that boring people do such as joining dull clubs with other dull people and that obviously has reflected in my taste for the conservative looking Explorer. After I retired I travelled a lot spending about 6 months a year touring Europe where the dress code is a bit more casual. To cut a long story short, I bought a 16610 Sub and immediately regretted it as I considered it looked a bit loud. I then for some mad reason bought a Freccione Explorer 2 which was a bit more vibrant than the 39mm Explorer but less loud than the Sub. I quite liked the Freccione despite the "disco dial" which makes accurate reading a bit difficult. I then bought a Zenith 16520 Daytona to use on the one or two days each year I visit a Formula one event and it is OK but nothing to write home about. Up until recently, the 39mm Explorer was my firm favourite and I have disciplined myself to wearing each watch in equal measure but for some strange reason I am now tending towards the Sub with the Freccione coming in second. I am now wearing the Explorer but I am missing the Sub that I have been wearing for the last few weeks when I was touring around Spain. The Sub just became the perfect watch and I actually came to like the cyclops that I previously disliked. Possibly I may give the Explorer and the Daytona to my sons who will probably enjoy them more than me. So here I sits, waiting for the day when I can wear the Sub again. Regards A somewhat perplexed Mick |

Sounds like a great collection you've got there. If your not feeling the love for the Explorer and Daytona then as you say I'm sure your sons will enjoy them, and will free up some wrist time for the Sub

Mick,
Wait until you try a GMTc....then you'll really be perplexed! I always enjoy your posts.

It's interesting how your opinion on the sub has changed. Btw that's a very nice collection you have there & I'm sure your sons will be thrilled with your Daytona & Explorer.

My first Rolex was an 1985 14K 1503/7 ... I recently treated myself to a 228238 DD40 and gave my first to my wife, who never really wanted a watch. However I may have created a monster, because she loves it and I love watching her wear it... So if you decide to give the Explorer and the Daytona to your sons to enjoy, I believe you will enjoy even more their enjoyment.

Mick do not fret, soon enough you'll have the sub on your wrist.
I do not find it to be loud at all. That said we all h as be our own preferences.

So true, thats why we need some diversity in our collections.
Perhaps one day you might like a Day Date Mick

I used to think the sport models were the be-all and end-all. But as I get older, I prefer the more timeless classics like the OP, AK, and DJ. I occasionally own a GMT but I end up selling it fairly quickly.

Tastes do change. I used to hate the Daytona (too busy) but now love it.

I never liked the current submariners, due to its lug sizes. But once I tried it on... Boom! Convert and looking to get my hands on one next week!

Hi Mick,
My first Rolex was the 16610, and I keep going back to it, despite all manner of exotica in the rest of my collection. It's my default "holiday abroad" watch. Very hard to fault it. |

The sub and gmt are great watches. Very similar. I actually like the pcls on the gmt :). I know some people don't . But I find they give the watch something extra.

I think the 39mm explorer is a pretty good all rounder.
I would of liked a no date sub, but would have cost me an additional £700 for a new one. In hindsight, maybe I should have stretched to the sub? But I think after a while people do get fed up with wearing the same thing whatever it is so its nice to have a change. |

The 16610 loud, eh? You are quite conservative, sir! Glad to read you now love it. I love the Explorer I. Looking forward to seeing the Basel model in person.

Chap,
Look here, mate. The SubC Date with the cyclops is an iconic watch that you can wear anywhere and anytime. It is a masterpiece of design. I hope you will consider acquiring one. Locutus |
