Insulted by AD
I have decided to flip my 116234 for a yellow gold and stainless DJ, so I visited a branch of the AD from whom I originally purchased the watch, (and another Rolex for my wife), about sixteen months ago. Would you believe that I was offered a mere 40% of the price I paid from new against the new watch? Even the branch manager appeared horrified!
I would have been happier if they just admitted they did not want a trade. They will be selling me nothing more.

You might do better with one of the trusted sellers here on the forum.

Living in the UK virtually precludes using trusted sellers. In any event I want to buy new. I have more irons in the fire yet, and in any event I will not be giving the watch away!

Oh yes. A very generous 5% on two watches!

its not a great selling watch.
you have the right to not be happy, but: if they offered you 40%. They can probably sell it at maybe 60-70%. And they have the right to make some money as well. They have all their brick and mortar expenses that they have to pay. I personally don't think it is insulting.

It's only business....especially on their part... There may be a number of reasons they gave you the response/figures they did. Too numerous to list here.....but I'll bet offending you was not on the list. Think about this.... At 16 months the watch is definitely USED. What would any end user pay for this watch right now? MSRP less 30%? That means the AD has 30% for themselves in which they have to probably Service, then SELL..... This means Inventory it for who knows HOW long before the first or hundredth prospect wants to shell out ANY money for it..... If that happens for them relatively smoothly, they will make 20%~25%. You are trading UP....which is good for all.... Do you think that was their final answer.....or would they reconsider? |

It sounds insane but, 30-40% of MSRP is standard on AD trade in. I don't think you should feel insulted.

Easy said but I was not prepared to argue the toss with someone who had no influence over the "deal". There are plenty of AD's who are prepared to go the distance. Clearly "loyalty" has no place in this AD's business plan.

I'd be furious, then I wouldn't buy new from AD with a peey 5% discount so I probably wouldn't be actually.

Figure maybe at 20% hit for being used, then add 20% markup for them to sell. No, it doesn't feel good, but that's what seems to happen with dealers and trades which is why I try to sell on my own.
Good luck |

Could you try selling it yourself? Maybe you could get more that way?

I think it's rather obvious that they would offer this. They would probably spend a little on getting it polished, touched-up and then would like to make a profit. If you look at the second hand prices in such shops and realise they are making a profit then obviously they bought it for less than they are selling it for. I wouldn't be insulted, I would have asked them in the first place. Just sell it privately, you will gain much more (or lose less)...

Your AD can buy a new one from Rolex for about 36.5% off MSRP. So offering you 40% off MSRP for your used one is more then fair .. |

My AD gives pretty good trade values but you have to spend 100% more than what they give you. And no discounts on the new piece. It probably all works out to be the same.
