YG or RG DD40: which PM pair makes the most sense?
For context, I had previously posted for advice concerning what PM model to get, eventually settling on a DD40 over a 116619 and more specifically one in yellow gold over rose gold.
However, like any dilemma in life, I have periodically wondered if I chose the right color, especially since I have time to change my mind! The main thing is that I have not seen a RG DD40 in person and am trying to figure out a way to do so before I have to make a final decision. I have a deposit on a YG DD40 at the AD but he is fine if I change my mind to the RG since the YG was already in stock. With this kind of price, I want to make 100% sure I made the right decision with no doubt or regret in my mind. Seeing Chadri's incoming post got me to thinking about it even more (thanks buddy ), so I decided to visit another AD and try on a 116505 as a surrogate. I was really intrigued by how well the rose gold color looked on my wrist. Now the dilemma is back and at Defcon 1 levels in my mind. YG: -Have chosen silver Romans -Classic so it'll still look amazing years from now -Already in stock at AD = better discount (but was from the case) -$2,700 cheaper than RG RG: -Either would be chocolate or green Romans -Looks amazing now but will that always be the case? -Would have to be ordered but would be fresh from Rolex in the coffin To help me decide further, I've started looking at the long game. I'd eventually like to trade in my 116610LV for a second PM piece a couple of years down the road. After the DD40's, there are 3 PM pieces that I like: 116618LB (previously not on radar, really has come on lately) 116619 (starting to sour a bit on white gold) 116505 (assuming it gets a ceramic bezel) I'd like to keep my collection to a maximum of two pieces, so I'm curious what combination makes the most sense to you guys. It's somewhat silly to choose a first watch based on a possible second watch, but with PM there's no flipping in my mind due to the loss of value so I'm considering all aspects of this purchase before I spend the money. As always, I've included pictures from the internet to help the thought process as well! Thanks for any feedback. |

For DD, YG or if your budget allows, Platinum. I am bias though as I own a YG DD40.

Like me before, I think you are heading for 2 PM pieces, and I went for the YG Subc and the DD2 in RG chocolate, they made a perfect PM pair for me for a time until the DD40.

I would get the YG DD silver romans OR the RG DD green romans.
Then I would later add a WG SUB.

If you can read the RG DD dial then that's the one. I can't see the hands well so would go with the YG between the two choices you have.
If you go YG DD then I think the WG Sub. If you do the RG DD then YG Sub... AK797's picture sold me on that. |

Personally I'd go the YG + WG. But the YG DD + YG Sub looks really good too!

That yellow gold DD silver Roman is a stunner. Don't let yourself be swayed. You will not be satisfied with rose gold. Go yellow gold. Rolex also has patents pending to change the color of their rose gold possibly. I would go dd40 or the sub easy choice.

I prefer your first choice, the Silver Dial, YG, DD 40. Classic good looks with the updated Roman Numerals will make this watch wearable for a lifetime. RG is ok and I have been down the road several times thinking I will give it a try but when I get ready to buy I always move toward YG or Platinum. Don't overthink this purchase and don't second guess yourself. I would go ahead and get it. Second watch for me would be the YG Sub with the blue sunburst dial. I would also keep the LV and have a great 3 watch line-up.

Hopefully these two pictures will help with the RG vs. YG decision. For me having tan skin, either works. The RG never looks pink.

Thanks for the input so far everyone! Doing more thinking if I go RG, I'd probably go with the green Romans over the chocolate as it's unique and more legible.
The pictures posted in this thread do help as I have tan skin and think the RG DD + YG sub combination looks great. Last night I was leaning towards RG but today it's back to 50/50. I remember growing up as a kid one of my teachers said when taking a multiple choice test, always stick with your first answer and don't overthink it. I agree that's what I'm doing here. I'll stop by the AD again this week and try on the YG and in the meantime try to find a RG DD to try on. |

I prefer rose gold to yellow but if you like YG that's the way to go across the board imo. Better resale too if it ever comes up.

First of all, I think the sub/DD pair makes the most sense speaking from a utilitarian viewpoint...If indeed having a couple of precious metal watches can be considered useful.
So...now all we have to do is pick a sub/DD pair. My vote would be between the YG DD/YG sub or the YG DD/WG sub. That would be a tough one...but I'll give the nod to the YG DD/YG sub. Both pieces are extraordinary. Good luck, |

For me, the key consideration is that the next PM piece is a few years off. That's a world of time in watch world as our tastes evolves, new models are introduced etc. Too much can shift to have that be a consideration now.
Personally, I'm not crazy about Rolex's everrose or rose gold. I find it very coppery in tone and I realize that puts me in the minority. Rose gold is also very de rigeur while yellow gold is either considered a little dated at the moment or classic, depending on your vantage ground. The YG silver dial, your first choice, would be an easy choice for me. Were I buying these two pieces now, defcon 1 would be sensible. |

Thanks again. I went yesterday to the AD and tried on the YG again, and I think it sealed it for me. They did have a rose gold 36 mm chocolate DD on black leather strap which looked good I must admit. I wonder though if the chocolate or green dial would get old after say 5 years, but I know the silver Romans will not.
I will be watching each Basel with interest that's for sure. I've decided (for now) to stay on the 116500 list for a black dial maybe in the next six months based on my position. I'll consider trading the 116610LV for it and enjoy the Daytona for a few years before flipping for a PM model. The DD40 will be the new constant. |

I think the DD looks best in YG. I prefer the black dial, but that's just my personal take. I prefer Subs in SS, myself. I think it's just more true to the nature of the watch.
