Rare or Not?

I just purchased a Submariner from a friend that needed the money. First thing you notice is no cyclops!! I read that Rolex put them on most all Date models but a few Subs didn't have the cyclops. Anyone here have any other explaination. Maybe previous owner had glass replaced.
It's a 16800 83500XX which makes it an 84 I believe. Thanks for your help. Newbie here and I like this forum already. It's as good as my Pcar forum, lots of knowledge and good people to help. Here I'll try to upload a photo, not good a close-ups.

Welcome to TRF. Some people remove the cyclops for whatever reason I'm not sure. Maybe they don't want a heavier SD.

the 16800 is fast becoming the next hot collectable-as it is still in the price range of the mid level collector-yours is a latter model with the minuet markers encased in white gold.
the earlier most desirable of the 16800's are the ones with the matte dial with-out surrounds-but your is still very nice.
I dont believe that rolex ever put out a sub without the magnification bubble-it must have been removed.
hope I helped.

Wellcome to TRF!. Dial on your watch may be a service one as 8.3mill. should have a matte one.

I have seen both dial styles in that serial range, purportedly they switched to only the late dial style between 8,4 and 8,6(from what I have been told)

Hey, that's me not you!

Off Topic, sorry to barge in, but...

Hi there "Porsche 911" and welcome from another noobie, the ORIGINAL Porsche... methinks there will now be some confusion... these WIS guys may not be too savvy with the differences between a 1986 model and a 1990 model! Hey you WIS's, mines the white one, his is the grey one! (I may have to change my avatar... ha ha)

Anyway, congrats on the watch (and the car too). Is it the same vintage as the P-car? Was that a special year for you?

Regards, John (the original Porsche)

PS. Guess I'll have to change my name and avatar anyway when I buy that Ferrari!!!

PPS. Think I'm going to go "green" and become a Pledge member - this has prompted me to throw my money in the hat and stop bludging, this site is well worth a few $. Steve, I'll PM you once I have Paypal'ed. Check back in a while guys and I should have a green name, Cheers....

All this P-Car stuff is too much not to reply!
Nice watch- Take it in to RSC for a service and have them refinish it and put a new crystal in if you wan it. Sure is a nice piece.
Sure would be cool to see a cyclops on the dash clock - especially in the new model 911's.

My p-car is an 87 Granite Green Metallic, matching leather interior. I like the no cyclops look and had read somewhere that Rolex did indeed not have on all models. It's also a sapphire which is nice. My other watch is a Tag 4000 model. There is some character to this watch with a few marks on the side of it. Maybe that's when he had the crystal replaced. Thanks for the info guys. No need to change avatars I like any p-car.

ps. Rennlist is my second home.
