Rolex 1600 vs 16000

I'm interested in a black dial smooth bezel Date Just. I've been researching the two references and the only real difference I can find between them is the quick set date function on the 16000. In terms of production, what one is easier to find? Is there a significant price difference between the two? Also, any further information that differentiates the two would be greatly appreciated.

The 1600 was 1570 based and the 16000 had the 3035 movement. I think the 16000 is a bit easier to fimd and any price difference is due to condition. The 1600 is fairly rare and commands a bit of a premium.

They were pretty much the same otherwise until the sapphire 16200 was introduced.

not to mention the black pie pan dial of the older 1600 is more attractive

One other question regarding the 1600. Were there multiple dial variations with different hour markers specific to the 1600 or did both the 1601 and 1600 share the same dials during production.

Thank you! Quite a collection of DJ's. Were you previously involved with the Cotton Bowl?

Just a fan. The Cotton Bowl has awarded watches to players and coaches every year since the first game in 1937. Between 1967 and 1976 they awarded either Rolex or Tudor.

1967 TT Air King
1968 Rolex Date
1969 Rolex DJ
1970 Rolex DJ
1971 Tudor Date (some confirmed DJs)
1972 Tudor Date
1973 Unknown
1974 Tudor Date Day 38mm
1975 Unknown
1976 Tudor Date Day 38mm

I have tried to acquire every relevant year but stupidly began showing them on the VRF which caused a bit of a speculative flurry. When I was offered an 1800US 67 AK for 6000 I knew the game was up. I priced myself out of the market.

I went with the pie pan dial and changed the crystal to give it a sportier look.

I have a media gift Cotton Bowl watch from a couple of years ago, unfortunately it's not a Rolex.

There's been some interesting watches over the years but it's been quartz city since '77. :)

FYI... the sweep on the 1600 model is a bit more pronounced than the 16000 model...

I don't know why I never posted my 1600 to this thread, guess I was less of a showoff in '16. :)

1969 1600, had it serviced at RSC Dallas in '06,

Put a loose '70 Cotton Bowl Dial on it about '08.

I have a 1970 ref 1600 with black gilt dial, has some patina on the white gold hour markers, on 78360 oyster bracelet with 558b end links. Can’t figure how to post a pic but if anyone is interested in taking a look please message me :)
