Help please based on my requirements?

Hi guys,

As this is my first post please excuse me if this has been covered before.!

I have been interested in watches for as long as I can remember. After lusting after a Rolex Submariner for years I finally saved up the money and purchased one! I have to say this was the best decision I have ever made and I absolutely love it!!!!!

I'm now getting to a position again that I can now make another purchase with savings I have built up.

I have my heart set on a panerai luminor case.

As I'm a complete novice where panerai is concerned I was wondering could you list some suitable models that would recommend for my first Panerai purchase?

My budget is £5000 max however if I could spend less it would be a bonus.

I would like to buy a model which hopefully can hold its money similar to a Rolex

As I have quite a thin wrist I feel 42mm should be my maximum.

I would like a model which offers ease of use when changing straps.

After consideration I think it better to go for an automatic vs Manual due to dexterity issue I have.

Finally I seem to like the clean dial type face opposed to date window etc.

Could you also recommend whether I should try to buy new or secondhand.

I really appreciate members taking the time to read this and hopefully assist me in advance.

Pams don't "hold their Money" like a Rolex.

I encourage you to first scroll through all the photos on the Panerai pages here and see what models appeal to you.

You won't find too many of 42mm models. They do not seem to be as popular with Pam fans.

I would be looking at a used 111

Try to stick with 44mm as the smaller models are generally unloved. That said, the 392 (42mm) could be worth a look.

Luminors 000, 005 and 111 are fairly safe buys, especially if gently used. These are manual wind models, so if you are set on autos take a look at the 104 and 24, for example. The Panerai website has a handy search feature which can help you narrow down the options.

I also agree that the 111 and 005 are killer "starter" Pams. Also, don't go with a 42, as you'll lust after the real deal 44. A 111 can be easily had in that price range and will have all of the classic Pam features that we all love.... Manual movement, exhibition case back, small seconds at 9, and depending on the series, a sandwich dial with Killer lume. The straps only require a screwdriver to change and it's very easy.

Welcome I'm very new to Panerai and have recently acquired my first.

As said already, it's unlikely any Panerai will hold its values like one of the main SS Rolex (Sub, SS Daytona, BLNR or the D-Blue), so the most important factor is to buy something that you're going to love.

If you pick up a pre-loved 000, 005 or 111 in very good condition, you're unlikely to lose much money should you choose to move it on. If you're patient, you might be able to find a new one, which is what I would do, but the 000 and 005 are discontinued and I think the 111 is too so it might take a while.

Either way with 44mm. PAMs are supposed to wear big.

Agreed - 112 another good choice.

@OP - 'Base' means 2 hands. The Luminor 'Marina' models have 3 hands. E.g. the 000 and 112 are Base models, whereas the 005 and 111 are Marinas.

There are some nice 42 mm models, but most are new with inhouse movements, so not going to go for a low value.

Might be some older ones, but more of a Historic type, so newer and auto I don't pay much attention to.

Also. New models won't hold their value unless really limited, but even those may depreciate when newer popular models arrive.

Although 40 mm are not that popular. it allows you to maybe get them for a lower price over the standard and popular 44 mm models, so if you decide to sell. Could break even on the resale or maybe make a little if Panerai increases prices.
