Is a Datejust considered "Under the Radar?"
One thing I have learned about myself, and I mean absolutely NO offense to all you TT owners, but I just prefer a SS watch; Yellow Gold center links and bezel are just not for me. Hey, TTs are absolutely gorgeous, but you have to go with what you are most comfortable with. One of the reasons I like SS is the topic we have discussed on this forum (ad nasuem) being "under the radar" I.e. It does not stand out in a crowd of a bunch of people wearing other silver looking watches. Hey, there is nothing WRONG with sticking out in a crowd, and I realize thats what some of you guys like about your Rolexes, more power to you i just don't feel comfortable wearing an all (yellow) Gold or TT watch; just me.
I was very comfortable walking around Mexico with my EX II last week and will probably be just as comfortable doing the same in Bogota Colombia next month. The EX II, being the "working" watch that it is, does not have PCLs, (obviously) no yellow gold showing; it just does not "stand out" like a Rolex. I am counting the minutes until Rolex releases the new DJ 41 in SS (hopefully very soon) and can't wait to get one. Now, it has PCLs, which IMHO looks very good, but does that, and the fact that the DJ is arguably the most iconic Rolex in the world, put it "Above" the radar? I.e. Does the SS DJ II (or 41) stand out MORE like a Rolex then say a SS sub or my EX II? Is it easier identified as a Rolex then the sports models? What do you guys think? |

Well the Datejust is one of Rolex's most popular models, so I'd say it would be fairly recognizable, especially if you have a fluted bezel. Then again, I own a Submariner and it seems to fly under the radar most of the time. Just wear what you like, and if you have any doubts you can always get it insured.

I got a DJII and nobody noticed. Then I got a Sub and nobody noticed. I'm starting to think it takes a lot to get above the radar.

If it has a fluted bezel, it'll stand out like a sore thumb.
Even if it's a smooth bezel, it will still be a beacon to all the wrong people. Having walked some mean streets in my day, it's my observation that no watch, or anything else, will tempt an honest person. It's the professional thieves, or even obsessed, opportunistic, hobbyist thieves, out there who know a luxury watch when they see one and will take advantage of a distracted mark. But bottom-line, I don't think any DJ is under radar, especially the 41mm ones. People often think that just because no one speaks, or if they don't have their watch ripped off, that no one notices. Trust me when I say that a lot of people make it their business to know what people wear for a lot of reasons from just plain nosiness to criminal intent.

Simple answer, no.
The fluted bezel stands out. If it's a smooth bezel the jubilee or oyster bracelet is too noticeable for it to go under the radar.

It mostly depends where you go, even though Bogotá is certainly not a safe city. That said, I think the Sub is so common, and sport/diving watches of all brands in general seem to be all over the place, that I would go with the Sub.
In any case, I feel the same way about Rolex watches that I only own one TT DJ. All my other Rolex are steel, or steel and white gold or platinum. And I do feel the shiny center links are somewhat of an eye catcher. I'd go with the Sub. |

Not at all, IMO... The DJ is the most Rolex watch Rolex has, if that makes sense... More so than the Sub. Not much more, still more.

if a thief is eyeing targets for time pieces he most certainly knows watches already so forget the whole "under the radar" silliness about two-tone vs SS or models. one's attention would be better focused on avoiding putting themselves in vulnerable positions and looking like a tasty target. if one is vulnerable a thief will first glom the wallet and gadgets. if he also wants to wrestle a watch off a wrist he will simply take whatever the heck the victim is wearing and worry about brand/model later.

I got way more attention for my silver stick DateJust (smooth bezel on Oyster bracelet) than for my Sub. One guy even asked me if my DateJust was platinum. lol

A decent thief could spot a DJ from 5 meters away.
All things considered though, you don't need a Rolex (or any watch at all) to be a target for robbery or theft. Sent from my SM-G9200 using Tapatalk |

Don't know how we got stealing watches from Paul's post, but, yes.
Nice tie Sam. And a nice dial. I'd like to see that one with a smooth bezel.

There are so many Rolex look alikes now that the average person probably does know or care that it's a Rolex. They just assume it's Michael Kores or Invicta.

Yes it 1000% stands out more than the sports line if we are talking fluted bezel and Cyclops. It is the iconic rolex.

Some people get mugged because of the shoes they wear.
Does staying below the radar means you have to dress like a bum, drive an old small car as well ? How far you want to go with this ? Just wear and use what you like imho

Fluted bezel is a signatory of Rolex so it does stand out a little for an SS, more under the radar would be an Exp, and if you want to go Axel Foley deep deep deep under the radar put it on a strap.

It's hard to say. I have a SS DJ fluted bezel and a Sub. No one ever comments on either...but that doesn't mean they don't notice.
Honestly I never thought about it nor do I really care either way. Wear what you like for you. |

Paul, I think you need to accept that the cyclops and oyster bracelet of your Exp II stand out plenty for those looking for that sort of thing.
I don't think a DJ will stand out any more or less (although YG and/or fluted bezel will flash a bit more). |

Paul, I really don't think that any variety of the DJ could be considered under the radar. Maybe keep the Exp as your travel watch and the DJ for more dressy occasions. Let Anna wear it every so often. (Sorry, couldn't resist!)

Before I even got into this hobby, I could spot a Datejust from a mile away, especially with a fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. I couldn't do the same with any of the sport models. So my answer is an emphatic no.
