Guys - I need cheering up today !!

Hi All,

I recieved this bombshell from Rolex today - I was really excited to recieve the revised quote, but the costing has really knocked me off my feet and really made me crap all day !!

I've attached a picture - remember the quote is in UK Sterling not Dollars (though I wish !!)

It's a bit hard to read, but am I seeing 4 figures to the left of the decimal with the most significant one being a "2"? OMG. Why not just buy a new one and be done with it?

Is that two and a half grand?!

I think it states vintage. Is that right?

I think it may be worth it because your 1630 is quite rare and the bracelet is quite unique. If you travel to Asia, it would definitely be cheaper at the RSCs in Singapore / HK / Tokyo due to currency exchange rates.

Funny enough - I phoned Rolex in Hong Kong regarding the bracelet and although English is the secondry language in HK - I really struggled to no avail
with the service division there.

The good news is that Rolex is willing to service it.

Sorry to hear that pal.

Rolex sucks when it comes to vintage.

Can't offer anything to cheer you up...I am but a sad clown shedding a single tear, deflated balloon and all!

I'm surprised, I'd say you try Singapore, people say they speak better English than the other Asians. If not, maybe Dubai. I heard it cost about SGD$400.00 to service a Rolex in Singapore and I guess the parts may be cheaper. It could be cheaper for you to take a holiday there and service your watch as well!

Keep em stiff Stuart me lad...you never know when we'll catch them with their trousers down...they don't like it up them etc etc.

I'm in the same boat. My OD has been with Tylden Reed since Feb. He's trying to source bracelet parts and a couple of extra links...I'm dreading the results.

I feel bad, the watch has so much emotion wrapped up into it's tiny steel body but it feels like a mini money pit.

I would never get rid of it...it was my grandfather's watch and it's all I really have of him but....sometimes it feels like a curse as well as a fab heirloom. It's like you are chosen to look after this watch for the generations past and the generations to come and you have to foot the bleeding bill.

If mine came in for repairs at 2k...man I'd have visions of gorgeous Pepsi GMTs waving at me from very very far away!!!!

I spoke to Tylden this week regarding it - I know the guy is really busy, even he was only 50/50 on the chances of success -though I think he had ideas of maybe rebuilding the bracelet.

If it has a lot of sentimental value to you.
And remember you may never be able to get another one.
Then its worth getting shafted just once.
When its done, and you have it back on your wrist you will have one hell of a watch. good luck!

Far be it for me to tell you how to spend your money but there are a few compelling arguments for having it done.
Once it is restored it will stay beautiful for the next generation.

Does it really need the new bracelet? Can you have it serviced and source a bracelet elsewhere? Just my

Peter - I did think the same.... but when I looked at a new dial hands, Flanges, Crystal etc......
It seems a shame to only do half a job - so to speak.

I won't give up - somewhere out there must be Bracelet (besides Rolex Geneva !!)

As regards sending it somewhere else... well, I have the view that if your spending money on a major service, I might aswell have Rolex papers to prove it.

Well, I think John(jac67) had a 1630 and he mentioned he paid A$350 (approx 160 quid) for one link at RSC here. So, 160 x12 links = 1920 quid + another couple hundred for the clasp, endlinks etc. ... Note that they are "only" charging 1600 pounds for the bracelet ex tax.

The dollar is getting stronger each day, you could hold out and ship it to the US in a few months and see if they would honor the pricing once converted. Worth a shot...
