Royal Oak for 40th?

Hello folks

Writing in from India.

I have the big 40th coming up and I've been looking at something special to mark the occasion.

I have the opportunity of purchasing a new Royal Oak ref 15400 ST from an AD in India and was wondering if a white dial would be more versatile than the grey/ black dial one? The AD has the watch wrapped in cling film so it's hard for me to appreciate the true beauty of the White dial. Is the white suitable for both casual and formal occasions as opposed to the grey/ black?

I'm getting a 20% discount from the AD in Delhi, which brings the price of the Royal Oak to about US$ 15,500. Is that a good deal?

How does the AP hold up to daily wear. I believe it's quite a scratch magnet and while most of my time is spent at the desk, I'm worried about picking up scuffs on the bracelet. Is it really as bad as it's made out to be?

A 38.5 mm Lange & Sohne Saxonia in yellow gold is also available at the same price (there's a 30% discount on it) and that's the other watch I've been looking at. Both very different I know, but please let me know if you have any opinions on the Saxonia.

I currently own a Panerai 233 in 44mm and a Rolex Explorer 39mm.

Would appreciate thoughts, opinions and suggestions.

Cheers

Hello, I spent the last year debating which watch and chose the black 15400. For a short time I even considered the blue but I wasn't willing to pay a premium for it. While the white/silver is beautiful, it was a bit monochromatic. I also felt like the black dial made the watch look smaller than the silver. No wrong choice as they are both beautiful. 20% off is a good deal from an AP AD. The black dial can look black, silver, gray, and blue depending on the lighting. The white looked too much like a disco ball.
The Lange is a great watch but very different from the AP. I chose the AP over a Patek 5167 because in addition to the watch, you get the amazing bracket the 15400 has to offer. Look forward to seeing some pics!

AP for sure. The dial colour is a personal taste. I prefer the black and definitely blue is the best. But in all cases it is a great watch! Happy birthday in advance

Personally went with the white 15400 and couldn't be happier.

Happy birthday, and I hope you mark it with a fantastic timepiece, whatever it may be.

Personally, you can get a BNIB 15400st in either black dial or silver dial for 13k from a trusted seller on here. If you want to save yourself the extra 2k then thats the route. If you want the AD experience then you can always go with an AD for the extra money. Personally i like the silver dial.

If you could wear a Pam 233 comfortably, you might want to consider ROO 42mm as well since non of your two watches are chrono.

I personally love the white dial, it can look silver as well. I think at certain angles the white gold indices look black and so it gives a great contrast to the dial.

As others have stated, the black dial is more muted and humble. The white dial is quite flashy, in sunlight it can appear sparkly and glittery, kind of like a diamond. Which is why I chose the black dial. I wanted the blue 15400 originally, but I didn't realize it was a Boutique piece only, therefore no discount, so I bought the black dial version. Yes, you will get the bezel scratched, there's no avoiding it, unless you just don't wear the watch. But I learned to live with my watches imperfections and come service time, APSC will make the watch good as new.

PS - Congrats on your 40th birthday and many more to come.

For the 15400, blue > black > white/silver dial.

I prefer blue... But the black is pretty versatile.

The bezel is the scratch magnet. Even stiff cuffs can mark it up.

That said, it's a beautiful watch. I love ALS...but not the entry level Saxonia. I'd have to have an 1815 or Lange 1.

thanks folks.. The only reason I haven't considered the black dial is because both my existing watches have black dials, including my Explorer, which is a steel watch. But I will check it out though and see how it wears.

I've also been severely tempted by the ROC 26320ST, but can't see myself ever really using the chrono function.

I guess blue dial would have been the way to go but paying a premium for it is hard to digest.

Cheers!

30% off the lange from a dealer sounds like a great price, i guess im the only one that would go that way, especially since you have 2 sport models already. My jumbo bracelet was worn very regularly for 6 months and the bracelet is a scuff magnet, but still looks good to me.

I would add the white dial as it gives your collection some variety that it currently lacks.

Blue is amazing... if you can find it...

I love my white (although it's really silver more than white)

White for sure over the black after I tried both. I might have gone for the blue, not sure.
