Searching for First New Rolex

I'm getting ready to purchase my first Rolex. Looking at the Datejust model. Undecided between the newer 41mm and the older 36mm models. Any thoughts on the size and gold vs silver face color ?

Can't advise on the dial color, but personally I'm partial to "classic" proportions. 36mm for me.

Welcome to the forum. Have you tried on both in-person? Take pics of wearing each, it helps make a decision. There's no one size fits all answer, pardon the pun? :D Good luck!

Size depends on you, I can't wear a 36mm it would look like I had my wife's watch on.

Strongly recommend you get both on your wrist before deciding. Swing by an AD to try on. Both are totally different in feel. I own a 36, tried on the new 41 looking to upgrade, it just felt too large? Love the jubilee on the 41.

After years with a 34mm Date I love the 41mm DJII. I have a 6.75" wrist.

Personally I would not buy a DJII right now since an improved DJ 41 is on its way.

A new version doesn't invalidate the quality of the previous version.

I don't think I made that statement in my one-line post. The OP was asking for information and no one had brought up the upcoming DJ 41 so far so I did. It is up to the OP if the new styling and the improved movement at what will probably be about the same price is something for him to factor in. All I can say is that for me, there is no use in buying a DJII. I've tried to like it, I want a DJ, but that one doesn't do it for me. I'm hoping when the DJ 41 comes out in SS (hopefully at Basel 17) it will be the one I'm looking for.

I have owned several DJ II's and have handled the newer DJ 41. The pre-owned market in the 36mm and DJ II are good right now. Go try them on and see which one you like. The DJ 41 not so much for me. When they come out with a DJ 41 SS model I may jump in but I doubt it.

Try both on. 36mm is a tad too small for my taste.

I went this route, I just love the dial and the overall feel. 36mm was too small for me (7.25") wrist.

Go with what looks best to your eye

Get a Sub or Explorer I/II. Great classic watches.

I suggestyou to try both - 36 mm and 41 mm. if you have big wrist size, then definitely - 41 mm. Few months ago I was your in your shoes :) I decided to buy DJ with black diamond dial, however, when I put it on my 8'1 wrist I saw that watch looks like women watch on it. Also, bracelet would need 2 additional links. However, when I tried DJII with champagne diamond dial I fell in love with this watch.

When you actually try watch on your wrist you can see whether it fits to you or not.

yes agreed,,
i have a smaller wrist so the 36 dj looks fine but if you have bigger wrists [mine are a tad under 7 inches] then it may be prudent to get a bigger model,,,,,
trying both on is the only way to see what you will be most happy with,,,,
very best of luck in your choice,,,,,

For me 36mm is too small and the DJ II is a bit too big, I too am hoping for the new DJ41 to be released in SS. I have a feeling hat will be the perfect watch! On the price side, a 36mm DJ and a DJII are very well priced right now on the grey and pre owned market.

I just can't go with the 36mm size, so that's a no-brainer for me. I would go with the 41mm.

Between gold and silver, I really like the smooth bezel 116300 with the silver stick dial...one of my faves. Good luck,

If you like TT then the DJ41s are the way to go, esp the choco dial is fabulous. If you want SS I'd wait till Basel.
