Advice sought for "dressier," more "grown up" Rolex(?)
I've been reading and studying this forum, and I've learned quite a lot about Rolexes. I currently own a 116610 LN which I've tremendously enjoyed for several years.
Presently, I am in the market for a second Rolex to celebrate an upcoming milestone in my life, and here is my dilemna. I am an attorney who works in an upscale metro area with high-paying clients, and I often wear a nice suit and tie. (Think Naples, FL, or Beverly Hills, CA). When I'm not wearing a suit to Court or meetings, I dress business casual. I am in my late 30's, and my perception (right or wrong) is that I am approaching the point in my life where my Sub C -- while amazing -- should not be my "go to" everyday business/lawyer watch. I truly love my Sub C, and I enjoy wearing it with casual outfits, on weekends, to the beach, etc., but I think that I should get a "more dressy" Rolex that makes a bit more of a statement, especially as I am approaching the big 40, i.e. officially a "grown up." My Sub C goes great with a suit, and I will still occasionally wear it; however, I want to get a new primary Rolex that is more "suit"able for my environment. So, which Rolex "dressier" and/or "grown up" watch would go best for my professional life? Obviously, my Sub C will remain and always be very special as my first Rolex, and it also commemorates a previous milestone in my life. I am open to a SS or a two-tone model, but probably not PM because it's not financially viable at this stage in my life/career. (One day, I hope to pick up a DD but not for at least 10 years.) Looking forward to your collective comments. Thanks in advance! |

That's a beauty, and I am a fan of the DJII in general.
I should have mentioned this because the DJII is a logical answer to my dilemna. My issue with the DJII is that it perhaps seems a bit large for my small-ish 6.5 inch wrist. I've tried several on, and they seem to overwhelm my wrist. This issue is exacerbated by my perception that the larger size of the DJII doesn't work great under the cuff of a suit (my primary expected use). All of the foregoing are "first world problems," which I completely recognize. Glad to have the company of y'all who won't be critical of me! |

I think you need the classic two tone 36mm Datejust 116233!

OP 39mm or Exp I 39mm. Love both of these watches and one of them will be the Rolex I buy as my only watch sometimes, hopefully next year. Both are dressy enough to wear with a suit and sporty enough to be an everyday watch no matter the situation. That is why I like them. The OP falls slightly on the dressier side while the Exp I slightly the sportier.

The new DJ 41 on jubilee would be quite nice.

I agree with you, and I've given this some serious thought. Even tried a couple on.
Issue: Does the new DJ41 on Jubilee present as "too old" for my purposes? I really like it, but I'm somewhat worried about the connotation (right or wrong) that the only people who wear two-tone jubilee DJ's are of grandfather age. |

I shall always be partial to my white 116520 (SS Daytona), as the all-steel look is sleek and classy with a suit, AND it also makes jeans and a t-shirt look like a 5 star ensemble.
That being said, my boss wore a white gold DJ with Roman dial... Woof that's a pretty piece and it looks fantastic with a suit. That thing is ALWAYS shining. Then again. Hulk and Bluesy. |

I was in a similar position and wanted something more low-key to wear with a suit. I went with a 36 mm Explorer. It's not as "loud" as a Sub, so I think it works great with a suit. What I really like is that it's a true sport watch, and can pull equal duty with jeans, shorts, or a swim suit. I haven't seen the new 39 mm one in person but the pics look fantastic.

An Oyster Perpetual is low key and not a bad option. I thought the DJII was on the big side for me as well but the blue stick dial with smooth bezel is a nice piece. I chose the YM with Blue Dial but they also have the Rhodium Dial now which is a gorgeous dial as well. The YM is sporty but a little stepped up elegance from the Sub IMHO.

I would suggest Daytona, white dial SS 116520 since you likely won't be able to get the ceramic model for a while.

I think either the YM or the DJ 36 would be an excellent choice and they both come in SS and TT... Good luck.

Would go for a type of Datejust then, it's a perfect stepping stone to a Day Date.
I'd go with a fluted bezel and oyster bracelet. Dial and metals depends on what strikes you the best in person. Good luck and congrats on your career thus far! |

Stainless Datejust 36mm white dial smooth bezel on Oyster bracelet, perfect lead in to DD40 later.

Based on your post and comments I would suggest in this order: Daytona 116520, AP 15300, new yachtmaster 116622 platinum dial, Grand Seiko Hi beat, or 36mm Datejust 116200.
I work in similar environment as you and rotate between a Datejust II 116300 and a JDM Seiko SARX035 when meeting with more frugal customers. |

I would go out side of Rolex for a dress watch.
Not a knock on rolex but you will find better finishing with other brands like IWC, JLC, AP, Patek.. Etc |

You couldn't go wrong with a Datona, but IMHO I think a Sub is always a good choice. In your case it's not "dressy" but it has class and style all day long.

I really like the idea of an OP 39 or Explorer, the older 212470 is an awesome watch for your situation. I have one and it brings a smile to my face every time I put it on. Great for a suit or casual.

Patek, VC or AP if you need to move away from sport models.

I'd go with an AP 15202, 15300 (if you can find one), or a 15400, depending on the proper fit. Very impressive. Or perhaps a TT Daytona, so you can use the chronograph function in court or with a client
