Over Polished Edge Ceramic Sub
Hello All,
I got this watch on trade about a year ago. I have loved every second of it and have worn it almost every, and it has served me well. I just have one concern i wanted to ask the experts about here. When i got the watch, it looked to be in fairly good condition, minus one area on the edge of the bottom portion of the watch. I looks as if a previous owner may have had a ding, and someone attempted to polish the edge to fix it. Now, when i bough the watch the pictures reflected this, so it was not a surprise. It has sort of bothered me, but not bad enough for me to do anything about it in the year i have owned it. I just reflects light oddly at certain angles. Obviously the edge has been altered The watch was originally purchased in 13, so i am probably going to send it in to RSC for a full service and polishing.. My question is, can this issue be remediated in any way? I am not looking for a perfect, or factory fix, but i would like it to be better than what it currently is. I know i could get a new case, but 2K for just that would make my cry a little on the inside. Please take a look and tell me what you think! |

I'd leave it. It'll never be flat again without thinning the lug. It was probably a sharp burr.

Agree with the above. No way to fix it without taking more material off. I would leave it as well. You'd have to add material, first, to be able to make it sharp again. Not sure if even Rolex would go there.

It doesn't look that bad, would also say leave as it is. If it really bothers you, laser welding will be required to add material to fix it. That is something RSC will for sure not do, would have to be someone like ABC Watchwerks in California

I am really just inquiring to see if a light polishing (from RSC) will make it look a tad better.. What i am hearing so far is no? |

I don't believe a light polish will help, no.

Seriously, I'd sell it! That would drive me crazy on an $8000+ watch. Sell it and get a perfect one.

And I say this because I've been there! Look at the top left lug. Couldn't flip it fast enough!

I thought I read on the Rolex site they can add metal to a case that's been damaged.

keep wearing the watch...eventually it will have several dings and scratches and you will forget all about that meaningless spot.

This can be remedied at an RSC they have a lapping machine that can provide a perfectly flat side and correct edge.... It's the cost of the service though that will bite.....

If it's going to drive you crazy (it would me) then bite down and send it in. Being a 13' as you mentioned you can get everything done at once and back on the wrist in no time.

I feel your pain having put a deep scratch in the bezel of my Daytona. As much as it's killing me, I've opted to leave it on the advice of RSC; they told me I'll only scratch it again so leave it until service time. Thing is, what's difficult is I can't look at the watch without seeing the scratch. However, I could look at your Sub to read the time without seeing that ding so it would be easier to ignore.
Send some photos to a specialist for a quote and then you can make an informed choice. If it's 'only' $300 to laser weld then get it done but if it's, say, $1,500 then you might as well get a new case

Hope there was some adjustment as part of the trade. If you knew it was there, why did you buy the watch? Obviously it's bothering you. I'd get it fixed.

The maxi case lugs are plenty thick enough to grind that away. Beat the crap out of it for a few years then send it in when the movement needs service. To send a watch in for a little ding is just nonsense. Quit focusing on it. Surely you have bigger worries in life than that.

There are RE-Casing options, but are expensive. I think they give you new serial numbers as well...

It would not bother me, but I am not a perfectionist. I live with all sorts of scratches and imperfections. Such is life.

Maybe have someone reputable (properly) thin all the lugs? Thick lugs are a common complaint about the SubC.

Contact Rik Dietel at Time Care inc. He can do service and fix that spot. it will look brand new when it comes back. He even replaced a burred screw from the origional sizing 25 years ago. And I hadn't mentioned it too him.......Best Jimmy

I really can't see much (if any) damage from the pics.
Only you know how much it bothers you. Me, I wouldn't worry about it. No body else will see it. |

Does not look so bad to me, think the RSC can work wonders with their lapping equipment during the regular service.
