Favourite Lyrics
Following Martin's thread about quotes, let's see your favourite lyrics...
my fave is probably a Dylan Lyric from Visions of Johanna... Lights flicker from the opposite loft In this room the heat pipes just cough The country music station plays soft But there's nothing really nothing to turn off J PS I also love the lyrics to both Isis off of Desire, Tangled up in Blue from Blood On The Tracks and Desolation Row from Highway 61 Revisited...baffling, loony, genius!!!!! |

Some of my favorite lyrics are from Jackson Browne. These are from "Sky Blue and Black"
You're the color of the sky Reflected in each store-front window pane You're the whispering and the sighing Of my tires in the rain You're the hidden cost and the thing that's lost In everything I do Yeah and I'll never stop looking for you In the sunlight and the shadows And the faces on the avenue That's the way love is |

Not a pop/rock song...
"For the sake of His sorrowful Passion have mercy on us and on the whole world...." From the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. There's a really beautiful version sung on EWTN. |

She was a fast machine
She kept her motor clean She was the best damn woman I had ever seen She had the sightless eyes Telling me no lies Knockin' me out with those American thighs Taking more than her share Had me fighting for air She told me to come but I was already there 'Cause the walls start shaking The earth was quaking My mind was aching And we were making it and you - Shook me all night long Working double time On the seduction line She was one of a kind, she's just mine all mine She wanted no applause Just another course Made a meal out of me and came back for more Had to cool me down To take another round Now I'm back in the ring to take another swing 'Cause the walls were shaking The earth was quaking My mind was aching And we were making it and you - Shook me all night long

How many special people change?
How many lives are living strange? Where were you while we were getting high? Slowly walking down the hall Faster than a cannonball Where were you while we were getting high? Someday you will find me Caught beneath the landslide In a champagne supernova in the sky Someday you will find me Caught beneath the landslide In a champagne supernova |

You’ve got to hold and give
But do it at the right time You can be slow or fast But you must get to the line They’ll always hit you and hurt you Defend and attack Theres only one way to beat them Get round the back Catch me if you can Cos’ I’m the England man And what you’re looking at Is the master plan We ain’t no hooligans This ain’t a football song Three lions on my chest i will have a think

Not mine but my son's fav Bob Dylan lyric
Darkness at the break of noon Shadows even the silver spoon The handmade blade, the child's balloon Eclipses both the sun and moon To understand you know too soon There is no sense in trying. Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn Suicide remarks are torn From the fool's gold mouthpiece The hollow horn plays wasted words Proves to warn That he not busy being born Is busy dying. Temptation's page flies out the door You follow, find yourself at war Watch waterfalls of pity roar You feel to moan but unlike before You discover That you'd just be One more person crying. So don't fear if you hear A foreign sound to your ear It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing. As some warn victory, some downfall Private reasons great or small Can be seen in the eyes of those that call To make all that should be killed to crawl While others say don't hate nothing at all Except hatred. Disillusioned words like bullets bark As human gods aim for their mark Made everything from toy guns that spark To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark It's easy to see without looking too far That not much Is really sacred. While preachers preach of evil fates Teachers teach that knowledge waits Can lead to hundred-dollar plates Goodness hides behind its gates But even the president of the United States Sometimes must have To stand naked. An' though the rules of the road have been lodged It's only people's games that you got to dodge And it's alright, Ma, I can make it. Advertising signs that con you Into thinking you're the one That can do what's never been done That can win what's never been won Meantime life outside goes on All around you. You lose yourself, you reappear You suddenly find you got nothing to fear Alone you stand with nobody near When a trembling distant voice, unclear Startles your sleeping ears to hear That somebody thinks They really found you. A question in your eyes is lit Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy Insure you not to quit To keep it in your mind and not fergit That it is not he or she or them or it That you belong to. Although the masters make the rules For the wise men and the fools I got nothing, Ma, to live up to. For them that must obey authority That they do not respect in any degree Who despise their jobs, their destinies Speak jealously of them that are free Do what they do to be Nothing more than something They invest in. While some on principles baptized To strict party platform ties Social clubs in drag disguise Outsiders they can freely criticize Tell nothing except who to idolize And say God bless him. While one who sings with his tongue on fire Gargles in the rat race choir Bent out of shape from society's pliers Cares not to come up any higher But rather get you down in the hole That he's in. But I mean no harm nor put fault On anyone that lives in a vault But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him. Old lady judges watch people in pairs Limited in sex they dare To push fake morals insult and stare While money doesn't talk, it swears Obscenity, who really cares Propaganda, all is phony. While them that defend what they cannot see With killer's pride, security It blows the minds most bitterly For them that think death's honesty Won't fall upon them naturally Life sometimes Must get lonely. My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards False gods, I scuff At pettiness which plays so rough Walk upside-down inside handcuffs Kick my legs to crash it off Say alright, I have had enough What else can you show me? And if my thought-dreams could be seen They'd probably put my head in a guillotine But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only. |

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didnt you? Peopled call, say, beware doll, youre bound to fall You thought they were all kiddin you You used to laugh about Everybody that was hangin out Now you dont talk so loud Now you dont seem so proud About having to be scrounging for your next meal. How does it feel How does it feel To be without a home Like a complete unknown Like a rolling stone? Youve gone to the finest school all right, miss lonely But you know you only used to get juiced in it And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street And now you find out youre gonna have to get used to it You said youd never compromise With the mystery tramp, but now you realize Hes not selling any alibis As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes And ask him do you want to make a deal? How does it feel How does it feel To be on your own With no direction home Like a complete unknown Like a rolling stone? You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns When they all come down and did tricks for you You never understood that it aint no good You shouldnt let other people get your kicks for you You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat Who carried on his shoulder a siamese cat Aint it hard when you discover that He really wasnt where its at After he took from you everything he could steal. How does it feel How does it feel To be on your own With no direction home Like a complete unknown Like a rolling stone? Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people Theyre drinkin, thinkin that they got it made Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things But youd better lift your diamond ring, youd better pawn it babe You used to be so amused At napoleon in rags and the language that he used Go to him now, he calls you, you cant refuse When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose Youre invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal. How does it feel How does it feel To be on your own With no direction home Like a complete unknown Like a rolling stone? great words and and one of my favourite all time songs. Robert Zimmerman sure is popular - his lyrics were just a cut above

She
She, maybe the face I can’t forget The trace of pleasure or regret Maybe my treasure, or the price I have to pay She, maybe the song the Summer sings Maybe the chill the Autumn brings Maybe a hundred different things Within the measure of a day She, maybe the beauty or the beast Maybe the famine or the feast May turn each day into a heaven or a hell She, maybe the mirror of my dreams The smile reflected in a stream She may not be what she may seem Inside her shell She, who always seems so happy in a crowd Who’s eyes can be so bright and oh so proud No one’s allowed to see them when they cry She, maybe the love that cannot hold to last May come to me from shadows in the past But I’ll remember, ‘till the day I die She, maybe the reason I survive The why and wherefore I’m alive The one I’ll care for through the rough and ready years Me, I’ll take her laughter and her tears And make them all my souvenirs For where she goes I’ve got to be The meaning of my life is, She She, oh, She

Well, I was drunk the day my momma got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck She got run over by the damned old train So I'll hang around as long as you will let me And I never minded standing in the rain You don't have to call me darlin, darlin You never even called me Well I wonder why you don't call me You never even called me by my name.

One of Bob's best!
"Please Mrs. Henry" Bob Dylan Well, I've already had two beers I'm ready for the broom Please, Missus Henry, won't you Take me to my room ? I'm a good old boy But I've been sniffin' too many eggs Talkin' to too many people Drinkin' too many kegs Please, Missus Henry, Missus Henry, Please Please, Missus Henry, please I'm down on my knees And I ain't got a dime. Well, I'm groanin' in a hallway Pretty soon I'll be mad Please, Missus Henry, won't you Take me to your dad ? I can drink like a fish I can crawl like a snake I can bite like a turkey I can slam like a drake Please, Missus Henry, Missus Henry, Please Please, Missus Henry, please I'm down on my knees And I ain't got a dime. Now, don't crowd me, lady Or I'll fill up your shoe I'm a sweet bourbon daddy And tonight I am blue I'm a thousand years old And I'm a generous bomb I'm T-boned and punctured But I'm known to be calm Please, Missus Henry, Missus Henry, Please Please, Missus Henry, please I'm down on my knees And I ain't got a dime. Now, I'm startin' to drain My stool's gonna squeak If I walk too much farther My crane's gonna leak Look, Missus Henry There's only so much I can do Why don't you look my way And pump me a few ? Please, Missus Henry, Missus Henry, Please Please, Missus Henry, please I'm down on my knees And I ain't got a dime.

The enigma of Louie Louie
It might be the lyrics to Louie Louie, but I have never been able to understand them.

Lady In Black by Uriah Heep
She came to me one morning One lonely Sunday morning Her long hair flowing In the midwinter wind I know not how she found me For in darkness I was walking And destruction lay around me From a fight I could not win She asked me name my foe then I said the need within some men To fight and kill their brothers Without thought of love or God And I begged her give me horses To trample down my enemy So eager was my passion To devour this waste of life But she would not think of battle that REDUCES men to animals So easy to begin And then impossible to end For she, the mother of all men had counselled me so wisely then I feared to walk alone again And asked if she would stay Oh lady lend your hand I cried And let me rest here at your side Have faith and trust In me she said And filled my heart with life There is no strength in numbers Have no such misconception But when you need me Be assured I won't be far away Thus having spoke she turned away And though I found no words to say I stood and watched until I saw Her black cloak disappear My labor is no easier But now I know I'm not alone I find new heart each time I think upon that windy day And if one day she comes to you Drink deeply from her words so wise Take courage from her As your prize And say hello for me Terry Newton

Verse 2 'Time' - Pink Floyd
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain. You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today. Few more Bob Dylan lyrics....
Somebody once said you could take any line from this and it would be an ideal first line to any other song. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son? Oh, where have you been, my darling young one? I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains, I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways, I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests, I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans, I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard, And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son? Oh, what did you see, my darling young one? I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it, I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin', I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin', I saw a white ladder all covered with water, I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken, I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children, And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son? And what did you hear, my darling young one? I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin', Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world, Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin', Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin', Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin', Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter, Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley, And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son? Who did you meet, my darling young one? I met a young child beside a dead pony, I met a white man who walked a black dog, I met a young woman whose body was burning, I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow, I met one man who was wounded in love, I met another man who was wounded with hatred, And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son? Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one? I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin', I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest, Where the people are many and their hands are all empty, Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters, Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison, Where the executioner's face is always well hidden, Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten, Where black is the color, where none is the number, And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it, And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it, Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin', But I'll know my song well before I start singin', And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. |
My all time favourite Dylan Song...from Bootlegs 1-3...missed off of Infidels album. Haunting and beautiful...find it and download it now guys.
Blind Willie McTell Seen the arrow on the doorpost Saying, "This land is condemned All the way from New Orleans To Jerusalem." I traveled through East Texas Where many martyrs fell And I know no one can sing the blues Like Blind Willie McTell Well, I heard the hoot owl singing As they were taking down the tents The stars above the barren trees Were his only audience Them charcoal gypsy maidens Can strut their feathers well But nobody can sing the blues Like Blind Willie McTell See them big plantations burning Hear the cracking of the whips Smell that sweet magnolia blooming (And) see the ghosts of slavery ships I can hear them tribes a-moaning (I can) hear the undertaker's bell (Yeah), nobody can sing the blues Like Blind Willie McTell There's a woman by the river With some fine young handsome man He's dressed up like a squire Bootlegged whiskey in his hand There's a chain gang on the highway I can hear them rebels yell And I know no one can sing the blues Like Blind Willie McTell Well, God is in heaven And we all want what's his But power and greed and corruptible seed Seem to be all that there is I'm gazing out the window Of the St. James Hotel And I know no one can sing the blues Like Blind Willie McTell |
Heartbreaking and vitriolic. From Bringing It All Back Home but the best version is the impromtu version in front of Donovan on the Don't Look Back Documentary!
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last. But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast. Yonder stands your orphan with his gun, Crying like a fire in the sun. Look out the saints are comin' through And it's all over now, Baby Blue. The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense. Take what you have gathered from coincidence. The empty-handed painter from your streets Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets. This sky, too, is folding under you And it's all over now, Baby Blue. All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home. All your reindeer armies, are all going home. The lover who just walked out your door Has taken all his blankets from the floor. The carpet, too, is moving under you And it's all over now, Baby Blue. Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you. Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you. The vagabond who's rapping at your door Is standing in the clothes that you once wore. Strike another match, go start anew And it's all over now, Baby Blue. |
Last Dylan One...Another heartbreaker from Oh Mercy...a rich, lush sound, the perfect break-up record and used to great effect in the flick High Fidelity! Lyrically probably not his best on paper but such a gorgeous song on record.
Most Of The Time Most of the time I'm clear focused all around, Most of the time I can keep both feet on the ground, I can follow the path, I can read the signs, Stay right with it, when the road unwinds, I can handle whatever I stumble upon, I don't even notice she's gone, Most of the time. Most of the time It's well understood, Most of the time I wouldn't change it if I could, I can't make it all match up, I can hold my own, I can deal with the situation right down to the bone, I can survive, I can endure And I don't even think about her Most of the time. Most of the time My head is on straight, Most of the time I'm strong enough not to hate. I don't build up illusion 'till it makes me sick, I ain't afraid of confusion no matter how thick I can smile in the face of mankind. Don't even remember what her lips felt like on mine Most of the time. Most of the time She ain't even in my mind, I wouldn't know her if I saw her She's that far behind. Most of the time I can't even be sure If she was ever with me Or if I was with her. Most of the time I'm halfway content, Most of the time I know exactly where I went, I don't cheat on myself, I don't run and hide, Hide from the feelings, that are buried inside, I don't compromised and I don't pretend, I don't even care if I ever see her again Most of the time. |
Great Lyrics.. My daddy left home when I was three And he didn't leave much to Ma and me Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze. Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid But the meanest thing that he ever did Was before he left, he went and named me 'Sue.' Well, he must o' thought that is was quite a joke And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk, It seems I had to fight my whole life through. Some gal would giggle and I'd get red And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head, I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named 'Sue.' Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean, My fist got hard and my wits got keen, I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame. But I made me a vow to the moon and stars That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars And kill that man that give me that awful name. Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July And I just hit town and my throat was dry, I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew. At an old saloon on a street of mud, There at a table, dealing stud, Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me 'Sue.' Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad >From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had, And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye. He was big and bent and gray and old, And I looked at him and my blood ran cold And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' how do you do! Now you gonna die!" Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes And he went down but, to my surprise, He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear. But I busted a chair right across his teeth And we crashed through the wall and into the street Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer. I tell ya, I've fought tougher men But I really can't remember when, He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile. I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss, He went for his gun and I pulled mine first, He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile. And he said: "Son, this world is rough And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough And I know I wouldn't be there to help ya along. So I give ya that name and I said good-bye I knew you'd have to get tough or die And it's that name that helped to make you strong." He said: 'Now you just fought one hell of a fight And I know you hate me, and you got the right To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do. But ya ought to thank me, before I die, For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you 'Sue'.' I got all choked up and I threw down my gun And I called him my pa, and he called me his son, And I come away with a different point of view. And I think about him, now and then, Every time I try and every time I win, And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him Bill or George! Anything but sue! I still hate that name! |
