Unobtainium...(HAHAHHAHHHH)

My cousin works with all sorts of metals etc. After a few years has come up with a new one. If a metal is very expensive and you can't buy it, is called Unobtainium. From the word Unoptainable...HAHAHHHHH. That's brilliant i say!!!

That would be 'UNOBTAINABLE' circa 1800's.

I think the screenwriters of the movie The Core (2003) or very possibly the boffins they could have consulted may have something to say about your cousin's claims to the creation and use of the word Unobtanium!

A fellow member with the name DSJ came up with this word : Hardtoobtainium

I laughed so much when he mentioned it

We were talking about patek watches and he said those are made out of hardtoobtainium

Eddie i am sorry to say it is- but with a b instead of a p
unobtainable unobtainable - not capable of being obtained; "a rare work, today almost inaccessible"; "timber is virtually unobtainable in the islands"; "untouchable resources buried deep within the earth"
from the dictionary

The term has been in use since the 1950's. Ring World is where I first ran across it, and by the 1980s it was fairly common.

But hey, it's still funny!

It was used in a golf equipment article years ago, to describe the alloy used in an exclusive new driver.

Ringworld is a book by Larry Niven, written in 1970. I'll try to be more accurate in the future!

Puppa! That's a riot!

And made of these proprietary compounds: 1/4 redneckium, 1/4 intoxicatium, 1/4 lewdnessium, 1/4 incontinentium (neutralized by Dependsium). That's a recipe for a one-of-a-kind guy in my book!

Back in the early 80s, I worked for an exotic materials guy who was also a science fiction geek. At the time, I assumed he had made the word up until he got me to read Ringworld. Then I discovered the source of his entertaining jargon.

My brother worked in aerospace and told me about "unobtanium" too He also said there are "metal mites" and when a wire was too short he asked one of his new workers to go and get the "wire stretchers" and watch them squirm for a little while when they couldn't find them in the tool box..
