Recycled Bottles = A New Rolex
Stopped by the local tavern Friday afternoon and couldn't help but notice that the proprietor was sporting a new GMT (one with a blue/black bezel. When I asked if it was a birthday or anniversity gift, he just laughed and replied that he got it by recycling the empty beer bottles over a period of five years. He mentioned that he accrues anywhere from 75-100 empty beer bottles a day and rather than simply tossing them in the dumpster, he decided to store and redeem them at 5 cents a bottle. Over five years, he had close to $8K which put him in the ballpark towards a new SS Rolex. In retrospect he now wishes that he had held off an additional three to five years so he could have purchased an even costlier Rolex model. At present, he's stashing away the empties for yet another acquisition, an Omega Speedmaster. Converting empty beers into Rolexes (or Omegas) is definitely a gift that keeps on giving.

Congrats to him for having the dedication to save and not spend the money. You should tell him that he can flip the blnr for no loss and get his "costlier rolex".

Great way to do it. Would be even easier without the high beer consumption lol.

At a nickel a piece, a bar owner would be a lunatic to throw bottles into the dumpster.
When I was a kid all soda bottles had a deposit and everyone saved them. In any case, saving for a Rolex was a smart move.

Great move as a bar owner. I could never throw away free money but also my add probably would not allow me to keep so many empty bottles around. That is 160,000 bottles at 5¢ a piece.

I love that story. Good for him.
I redeem my empty bottles also but it's usually just enough to get a loaf of bread.

Wonder if he counted that $0.05/bottle as extra revenue for tax reporting purposes... ;)

Smart for sure but the watch wasn't free from recycling. He spent much time organizing storing transporting and transferring the bottles. Worth it all for sure though.
