As an investment is a new Diver okay?
I don't know much about the serial numbers for AP divers but I am about to close on a new AP Diver. Do I need to ask what the serial number is or anything like that or will this new watch be fine? I don't think I'm going to be trading and selling any time soon or buying for an investment. I just like the watch but of course I want to get a watch with a story if possible.
Let me know your thoughts. |

I'm not sure if any watch qualifies as an investment.

Barking up the wrong tree, Johnny – AP and investment are words never used in the same sentence, certainly not where the proposition is the commonplace Offshore Diver.
If you want investment potential, buy specific vintage Pateks, if your pockets are deep enough, and you’re not of a nervous disposition – otherwise, buy what you like the look of and just enjoy the pleasure it provides. Either that or stick to more pedestrian brands where ‘renting it’ will cost you a thousand dollars (give or take a few hundred) for the duration of time that you’ll have it. |

Not an investment but you should be able to get a good discount on these, esp from a trusted seller here.

The Diver is a great watch but shouldn't be looked at as an investment.
Shop around and you'll be able to get a good deal. Wear and enjoy! |

I wouldn't buy a mass-produced watch as an investment.

Not an investment but an expense. Expect to lose around 3k if you buy new at trf prices and wear it a few years.

i dont see this as an investment but it is a nice excuse when making a large purchase, such as an AP.

I bought my Diver BNIB with a good discount from an AD. I sold it a year later for about 500€ less than I paid.

AP watches is never for investments. On average you will lose $6k++ if you buy brand new from AP boutique.

OK a diver is clearly not an investment piece, many produced, the ceramic diver on the other hand was produced in small quantities, according to the numbers I would say around 500-600 were made, new ones go for the last known retail on chrono24, and sure one day the prices might gain a little, but the SS diver cannot be seen as an investment grade watch, I guarantee you won't make money on it, if you buy at a very good price you should loose not much, around 2K I would imagine, so if you love it get it, just don't expect it to gain value at all...

For me, investment is an asset that returns predictable income streams over time. That does not include watches in my world. Pay cash not needed for basics then buy what you really like and wear and enjoy. If it holds value or appreciates, that's just a bonus to the primary wear and enjoy benefit.

So what do you think? And what do you mean by "get a watch with a story?" If you are buying new, your watch will not have been worn by a Navy Seal on a secret raid ... if thats what you meant. The AP is a "gentleman's diver" therefore many never see a pool much less an ocean. |

OP's title and message don't match. He says he's NOT buying as an investment. He is however, looking for a watch with stories

If you're going to buy the Diver then treat the purchase like buying a nice car in the sense that if you decide to sell it there will be a market but you're going to lose some money.
I had a Diver and I loved it but I only used it for the beach or swimming at the gym so I sold it to a pal. Now every time I see him wearing it I want to buy it back, it's a great watch. |

Watches are not investment. But the Diver is a fantastic watch and the "investment" in this case is the pleasure in wearing it. My SS Diver is currently my oldest watch in my collection and I have not yet get bored with it.

As far as story, the AP Diver certainly doesn't have nearly the same mystique/history as an Omega Speedmaster or Rolex Explorer, but it's known as one of the first super high end divers and is well respected within the ROO family. It's up to you whether that history is sufficient.
PS - Arnaud, blue 15400? Nice pick up man! |

AP Diver...Probably 10-12% growth per year of ownership...
Kidding of course, but as others have said there are deals to be had on AP Diver here on TRF on new, pre owned, and if you want a smaller out of pocket the previous Diver model with solid case back is a little bit less expensive too. |

An investment is usually a limited edition.
But if you buy right, you might be able to sell it later for minimal to no loss. Base case |

Thanks all. Sorry for the stupid question! I just wanted to know if the watch would hold its value but I guess not. Which is fine. I'm not buying the watch to resell it. The watch is bought to be worn and enjoyed.
