Anyone else been PayPoled?

I've been using PayPal uneventfully for 6 years...until now. I bought something that never arrived, despite two attempts. My credit card company charged back the amount ($94.98), because the seller never refunded the money, and PayPal said it was too late to charge it back through them. PayPal has now frozen my account until I reimburse them this money. I OK'd the reimbursement today, and told them I wish to close my account. They said it would take a week for my payment to go through. Huh? Their "fast and friendly" payment system allows me to pay anyone--but THEM--in 10 seconds or less?

Anyone else been through this, and perhaps found a better solution?

Thanks, Toph. If nothing else, they're encouraging me to buy locally.

honestly if i had another way to safely and securely pay for things from around the world I would. I often don't accept it for expensive goods.

the other day i sold something for $450. the guy pays me instantly. the funds arrive but paypal hold them. i sent numerous email etc etc. the money is being held until the buyer leaves positive feedback because these items are often subject to fraud. It is a new policy we are trying. at this point i went Ballistic but in a cool and calm sort of way. anyway the buyer leaves me exemplary feedback the next day. still no funds. more emails. replies -we are sorry it takes 24 to 48hours to process that. But some buyers forget to leave feedback so what would have happened then the make my blood boil but i did get my money eventually. what right do they have to hold my money like that it must be illegal.

I have never used PayPal, and don't want to.
Lisa was kind enough to accept my money and use her account so that I could become a 2008 Pledge Member on TRF.

The reason for the week to get it through is sometimes people just forget about it or have a change of heart and stay. The thought is you might forget also, like a warranty for a light bulb at Home Depot. Do they really last 2 years?

You might have to call or email them in a week to remind them to credit or close your account.

I might not have been clear. My account is frozen until I reiumburse them. I phoned them this morning, and they are processing the reimbursement at my request. They said to electronically transfer the $94.98 from my current balance into their account would take a week. Once that is handled, then I will be able to close my account.

I still use them, but discovered their true colors (and those of fleabay) after a scam transaction with someone in Malaysia claiming to be in S Cal. NEVER forget these a-holes care only about their profits and if lifting a finger to help you in a fraud case cold potentially reduces their commission you are going to get screwed. Thankfully, part of my transaction was done through AMEX (now the ONLY way I use PayPal) and they believed me and processed a charge back even though PayPal resisted. To this day don't know who ate the $10K but I hope it was PayPal, they allowed the thief access to the money even while the fraud investigation was underway.

Mine was processed through PayPal on my credit card. But PayPal said because the credit card company charged back the money, I owe PayPal, when in fact they are currently out $0. I asked them to consider the logic. "I am paying you for something I never received." The PayPal agent said, "Yes, that's right."

I'd look into this further unless you just think it worth $100 for it to go away.

I am not a big fan of paypal.

I went thru the same sort of thing for about $100 (about 3 years ago). I just had to take the loss and forget about it.

I know your pain.

Clearly, the costs are small enough to each individual that they can make $millions for nothing, without encountering any resistance to the policy, which I suspect is illegal. Eventually, there will be a class action lawsuit when they screw over the wrong person.

Screw them. Leave it in the negative and walk away from the account. It's been done many times before (google it). I hate paypal, but buyers aren't willing to use any other payment methods for small purchases.

Sorry boa, should have read your post a few times. A.D.D. thing. I do use paypal but use an American Express to cover any charges. A. E. always has the muscle to make sure things go right.

I've heard the PayPal stories also, tho so far so good in my cases.
I use ebay often, and alot of Seller's only want paypal for payment.

I would not use PayPal unless I put the purchase thru my Credit Card with clout to stand up to the shananigans that may result thru use of PayPal. PayPal always asks to use a debit card vs. the credit card. I know my card company will stand with and behind me.
So once I heard the stories from my own ebay contacts, it's "no Debit Card, but the Credit Card only, and the only way I ROLL-ex!"

I used a credit card. My credit card company charged back the money for the item I didn't receive. THEN, PayPal froze my account until I reimbursed them. So, unless you charge back the money through PayPal, you're on the hook to pay them back. Yep, it's ridiculous.

I have been thru it all with paypal and learned alot. None of the stuff is perfect. Sprint charged me a bill of $1700 and all I did was add text message for $5. My bill was never over $73.50???After they investigated, the customer rep forgot to type in a code.

boa have you initiated a dispute with the seller through paypal? or your transaction was directly between you and the seller without going through ebay?

2 months ago I bought something in ebay and never received it. I initiated a dispute and waited 4 weeks for the mediation process before I got my money back from paypal refund.

Good luck!

I use PayPal and pay through my credit card, never my bank account. This way, I have 2 layers of protection regarding my purchase: the PayPal complaint system (crappy option) and my credit card's own guarantees against fraud/etc. (much better option).

See above. I posted three times that I used a credit card. It does not relieve you from having to reimburse PayPal.

Today, they took the money from my account AND I had to call them to get the limitation lifted. I'll be closing my account as soon as the remaining balance has been transferred to me.

as soon as I heard ebay forcing people to use electronic payment methods from now on, I just don't have the stomach to do business with paypal. Double dipping for sure.

eBay owns PayPal.
