AP RO Most versatile dail - advice needed

Hello,

My friend is planning to buy her husband AP 41 mm Royal Oak for his 40th birthday.

One Lucky chap!

He already has a Tag Carrera Chrono, Bell and Ross as everyday watches and Cartier Santos as dress.
As Apple fan he also has their watch but this does not count .

Despite my attempts to convince her that SubC SS or WG would be great choice she insist on AP.

She also wants to make him a suprise and wants to decide in dail colour without asking.
The problem is that she is absolutely lost.

I went with her to AP shop and looked at dails avaliable. Shop only had white, black which were beautiful and two tone which she dismissed. She also liked blue which saw in catalogue but there was no stock, although can be ordered and delivered within few days.

The watch most likely will be worn on special occasions, dinners, functions, most likely with suit or smart casual attire.

As i have no expirenece with wearability of AP in real life ,and as Sub owner always chose black as first option ,can you please share with us from your expierence which dail would be most versile and suit most of types of clothes?

I have taken some photos of watches which were in stock.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers, Will

Silver dial is better to see the dial design, but the black would be considered more appropriate for the usage you’ve suggested.
Neither would be strictly appropriate, without swapping to the leather strap – which with the clasp and plots, and a decent set of screwdrivers (assuming he’d be remotely interested in changing it himself) is a fair bit more expense.

Maybe the RO isn’t the one to consider after all, in that respect, and if something more suitable to fairly formal occasions is required, then a VC Traditionelle or Moser with their beautiful fumé dials should be considered.

I like both, I'd probably go with black ultimately, not sure you can make a wrong choice. When I went the factory it was interesting to see that virtually all the watchmakers who were wearing Royal Oaks had silver dials but I never asked why they seemed to have a preference for silver.

black would be a little more sporty looking
white a little more dressy
blue a bit unique, but more to the sporty side too.
whats his skin colour? i imagine black would look better on a very pale person and white better on darker skin.

Depends more on his color pallet. The black dial IMHO ends up being boring after less time (while still looks amazing don't get me wrong), the silver/white is actually really nice and brings some appreciate lightness to the dial and its detail...but the blue is likely the best overall as it mixes the traits of the black and the silver pretty well. Id' go blue in the end of the day unless he wears a TON of black clothing all the time.

I choose blue. If it's not available then go for the black. I am not a fan of the white/silver dial.

On the 15400 you have to go for the blue dial, it is so nice, almost as nice as a Rolex blue dial.

I change my mind. If blue is on the table thats the best 15400 dial you can get.

in terms of dial it's tricky, mine is blue, but think black is the most popular one.

I agree, however it is wife who wants to give anniversary gift without consulting with husband.
She loves AP so i dont even try to convince her for anything else as this is not my call

He has very pale skin so i would also think that black should suit him better.

This would be my recommendation and i will share a final result with all of you in upcoming weeks when she will buy a watch.
I will also ask him for photo so i could share with community.
Everybody, Thanks for all advices.
Cheers,
Will

Silver is my favorite and the one I own. I looked at the black, but was wearing a dark shirt the day I tried it on and when I flipped my wrist to look at the time, the hands reflected the dark color of my shirt and disappeared on the dial - impossible to read the time.

I agree with this. I personally chose the black over the blue as I found it more versatile. The silver definitely shows the dial design the best, but it was a bit monochromatic for me. I was also a big fan of the contrast the markers have against the black dial.

Love silver. Not sure what else is in your collection but if you've got another Rolex with a black dial then definitely go silver. But if blue is an option then that always nice too; but a few thousand more expensive
