New Watches Running Fast

Hey guys,

Just today I purchased my 2nd Rolex. Brand new. My 1st Rolex was also brand new AD purchase. As some of you may recall (probably not) my first Rolex ran very fast when it was brand new. Upwards of 20 seconds fast per day. Over the course of the first few months it slowed down and now my OP only runs about 3 seconds fast per day.

So, I've been wearing my new datejust now for 6 hours and it's already gained 5 seconds! The AD told me this was a very new watch from Rolex just like my OP was. I fully expect this watch to settle in after a few months of wrist time just like my first watch did. I still really believe that the new mainspring is simply too strong and is causing the balance wheel to over swing and hit it's maximum amplitude therefore reducing the period of the balance wheels rotation.

In any case, has anyone else noticed that their watches run fast when new?

I'll keep you posted on the progress of this watch. Last time it didn't need service just a bit of time before it settled in.

Cheers,
Andrew

I've not seen that on any watch I've bought.

One did run slow -10 per day, but I returned it. Not a Rolex btw.

My new sub is a bit less than +2 seconds a day. It's within Rolex's +2/-2 standards so I'm happy. But I have to admit about a month ago I had DJII that was spot on for a week!

The same thing happened with my 214270, brand new as well. It went to RSC and came back running almost 0 spd. In fact it gained 5 seconds between early November (switch to normal time) and early march (switch to daylight saving time) . Now that's superlative !!

My 2016 Explorer is at +2sec/day and has been since I got it in August brand new from the AD. Your Rolex watches should be within the Superlative Chronometer Certification of +/-2sec/day from day one with no settle in period. This is what you're paying for. I'd go batty if my new Rolex was at 20 sec/day. Just sayin' . I found the attached link interesting in this regard. Cheers!

My watch is synched with my brain so it naturally runs fast.

Seriously, though, mine runs a bit fast but it does not bother me at all. I don't count how many seconds or whatever, I'm not OCD that way.

My BLNR was about -1.5 to -2 when I first got it. Two months later it is running consistently at about -.3. I'm not sure if there is any science to the "settling in" idea, but it seems to happen quite a bit.

BLNR bought new, it was about +2.5 a day when new, and it's true, there is a break in cause it went to almost no + - to now -1.5/day.

So it started + when new and now is losing time.

I think it also has to do with what kind of work you do and how it's stored when off your wrist.

Mine started and remains a bit slow....

My most recent acquisition, a Sub purchased new from an AD started off running about -3spd and after a few months is now running aprox. -2spd very consistently. Notably, resting position seems to have no effect on the accuracy nor does the degree to which the mainspring is wound except when nearly unwound at which point it briefly seems to gain time before losing time shortly prior to stopping.

Make sure you're using an unassailable time reference.

If that's the case then obviously the watch is way out of spec.

My Sub was running very fast when I picked it up (about 12 seconds a day), but it settled down within a week or two, as the watchmaker suggested.

Still, I have had all my Rolex watches regulated under warranty, one twice.

Give it some time, then take it in for a regulation, if it still needs it. It's not a big deal.

I would say losing 2 sec per day is well within chronometer's specification (+6 to -4 sec per day if I remember it correctly)
Though some fellow members may prefer gaining than losing second per day.
My GMT II ceramic Pepsi is gaining 4-5 sec per day since brand new from the box.

Best, Henry
