The explorer is a classy watch with no complications other than time. It has a simple and beautiful dial. It was the original watch worn by James Bond since we know that Flemming wore an explorer when he wrote the books. Did you know that Flemming was a secret agent himself in ww2? I could go on and on about why the explorer is great..associated with the everest mission etc. It is one of the true greats in the rolex lineup. I'll stop before I convince myself to buy one again.

I love my Explorer, short hands but upgraded bracelet and all. It's one of my No Flip pieces, durable, reliable and versatile. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

It's just a beautiful, well built, classy, do it all watch.
I own everything from a Z Blue Milgauss, Hulk , to a Ceramic Black SS Daytona.... Still not content. Still want to add the Explorer back into to the collection. |

The Explorer is my first and only Rolex and a watch I'll never part with. It is beautiful in it's understated elegance and I can't think of a better all purpose watch.

I have a 36 mm Explorer and a GMT Master II; I love them both. They get equal time on my wrist. You can't go wrong with the Explorer. It has the same 3130 movement as the no-date Submariner, but flies under the radar. In other words, it's a Rolex that only true horologists notice.

I'm also in the club where the Explorer is my one and only; rugged yet elegant. I wear it mountain biking, working on my truck, and to black tie events.

My 114270 was my first Rolex and it's still my Rolex.
You know, this thread could use some pix.

That should read: "...it's still my favorite Rolex," and it's still mine, too.

It's very versatile and can cover a lot of bases. It's one of those rare pieces you can strap to your wrist in the morning and feel ok no matter what situation you end up in (in regards to what watch you're wearing and within reason, naturally). A key ingredient in that is the fact that it's very understated (and you really need to appreciate that, otherwise you'll be disappointed).
It's also one of the oldest Rolex models still in production (OP -> DJ -> Explorer (the year may be shared with the Submariner, but Rolex lists the Explorer first on their timeline and the Submariner was released one year after the Explorer according to Wikipedia)). The Explorer has a neat story and was, as others has mentioned above, the choice of Ian Flemming who is a god. Where it would fit into your collection depends a lot on who you are and what you do (and why you collect watches). It would fill the gap between the Submariner and a dressier piece. The Speedmaster sort of does that, but it's more fragile (albeit still very durable), a little sportier, and lacks the WR. |

I was drawn to the Explorer's understated elegance, timeless design and heritage. It's a case of less is more. The easiest of all the sports models to wear for any occasion IMHO. You will not hesitate to strap on your Explorer for any event or get together It also fits well into most collections. Here's a link to a Rolex Explorer TV ad I've seen run recently. Cheers!
https://www.ispot.tv/ad/AHVa/rolex-explorer-everest Link also has recent TV ads for other Rolex models (appear after playing Explorer ad), Enjoy! |

Bumper to bumper badass watch. I have the 36mm six digit reference, and now and then I consider upgrading to the 39mm. It's a nice addition to any serious watch collection.

The 114270 was my first Rolex as well, and I'd never part with it. It's much more versatile than my 16610. In fact, the only reason my Sub gets a bit more wrist time is to preserve my Explorer lol...

I have the 14270 U serial....from the year of my son's birth, 1998. He doesn't know it, but he'll be receiving it for his college graduation in (hopefully) four years. In the meantime, my wife and I will share it once my son leaves for college next summer. He's never seen the watch.

I don't know if it's a mistake or not, but I went with a blackbay when it came out over an Explorer 1. Nothing has quite come close to scratching that itch for that. I did end up getting a Smiths, but it's not quite a smiths or an homage to a proper Explorer 1.

I agree with all comments above. The Exp has a timeless design, although understated and very much under the radar − which makes it an acquired taste (at least, it was for me).
I also like the fact that it is uncommon. E.g. there are many (awesome) Subs around, and they are very recognizable. Choosing the Exp requires a willingness to take a different path. That makes it special for me. |
