Tudor Black Bay - third winding issue

My just over two year old Tudor Black Bay has another recurrence of the manual winding issue. The rotor spins when I turn the crown to manual wind.

This is the third time it has developed this fault. On the two previous occasions the RSC at St James's Square fixed under warranty. The last time was in the summer. As I have a few other watched this one get "rotated" so has only been worn twice since the last repair, hence I was rather annoyed to find the same fault has come back.

I wrote to Rolex UK and explained my disappointment with the previous two repairs. They replied by return that they would have one of the senior watchmakers look at it this time.

I will let you know what happens next. Hopefully they will get it sorted this time.

Yup, please keep us inform. I also have a Black Bay and so far it's been great. Hopefully won't run into a similar issue later on down the road.

Well, hopefully the 'senior watchmaker' can figure out what's wrong with it.

Seems like RSC at St James's are closed until 3rd January so I will have to wait until next week to take it in.

Further updates to follow.

I dropped my BB in with the RSC in St James's last week. Yesterday I had a call to say they are going to replace the movement. Hopefully I will have the watch back soon

That's a great question, but I would see no reason for RSC to 'upgrade' him to whatever current movement the watch has now.

They already have their inventory of ETA parts, why would they not use them?

Yeah can't see it altho I would write to Rolex, who will know you well by then, and ask for it if this happens again.

Also, I don't know if the house movement will fit because the ETA has a thinner case.

I've never heard that.

All the specs I've seen say it has a larger caseback, same case.

Could you explain what you mean when you say the rotor spins? I notice when I wind my Black Bay that sometimes you can tell its not winding, I always thought maybe I was pushing the crown in a bit?

My Not a good idea to manually wind an ETA movement. I know it should handle manual winding but majority of the users with watches <$1000 with ETA follow this trick of not winding the watch just give it a shake and set time and move on. That will give the movement no issues.

Not sure I agree. I wear my Black Bay in rotation and so I when it comes to its turn, it gets 40 turns to get it going. Think that is what they are designed for!

I've owned several ETA 2824 and 2892 based watches over the years, and I've never had an issue with winding. Occasionally, a dud simply happens, no matter what the brand.

This happened to me 2x with my ETA black bay. AD replaced it and now I give it about 25 winds and no problems.

I also had this issue with my brand new Black Bay. Seems odd this happens this often with this model. I've had lots of ETA-based watches and this is the only time I've ever seen this issue.

Thanks for these posts, as this just happened to me tonight... did RSC ever say what the problem was? Guess I will be bringing it in to my AD , luckily still under warranty.

They replaced by movement after the third visit. They didn't say what the problem was. Seems to be fine now.
