190.0
I've been posting my weight-loss for just over six months.
I just got off the scale and today I weighed 190.0lbs. That means that the goal I set for myself on 16 June 2016 has been reached. I've lost 64lbs. so far. The important thing is that I have completely changed my approach to eating and nutrition. Although I'm not technically on a diet, I expect that my eating habits will continue to result in weight loss. I've always thought that if I could get down to 190 that I could get to 185 without difficulty and 185-190 is a weight I carried pretty much through my 20s, 30s, 40s, and well into my 50s, when I semi-retired and got careless. I also figured through those careless years that I'd need to get back into shape for my 70s, which as we know is a pivotal decade with regard to health.

Congratulations! About 12 years ago, I lost 50+ pounds using "The Zone" by Dr. Sears. I mostly kept that off for all that time since until I was in a car accident two years ago, December 18th. With 2 back surgeries and recovery and all that goes along with that - I gained almost 30 pounds. I started last August 1st and I've lost about 25 pounds (although the holiday season is tough :) and I'm feeling like myself again. Like you, I've thought about the need to get in shape as I age - I'm only 45 but an accident like mine has a way of aging that is not recommended! Thanks for sharing your progress - it's more inspiring than perhaps you realize. All the best for 2017!

Did that mean reducing your intake of complex carbs, sugar and alcohol (if applicable)? Most folks will not gain excessive weight by eating primarily meat and a varied selection of vegetables/fruits. it's often the starch and 'junk foods' (combined with a lack of physical inactivity) that creates the associated problems (i.e. obesity, diabetes etc.).

Awhile back I bought what passes for a half-gallon of ice cream these days and got home and ate the whole thing in one sitting. I just compensated for the next few days and it will be a long time before I do that again. It's all about balance.

As you have experienced, portion control is a key factor in losing and maintaining a healthy weight. Reducing daily caloric intake has been shown to increase longevity. Parisians, stereotypically, consume rich foods with sauces high in saturated fat. Yet they don't have the obesity problem as in the states. No doubt a result of portion control and of course the amount of walking each day. "Sitting is the new smoking". The Mediterranean diet is one of the more tried and true "lifestyle" plans; similar to yours. I wish you continued determination and success. |

Huge congratulations Grady! About two years ago I was about 230, set my goal of 190. Sounds like you and I are eating the same lifestyle. Definitely not a diet. My son got me into the rock climbing gym, three nights a week, hour and a half, stopped the pasta, rolls, ice cream and junk snacks. Still have pizza and pasta maybe twice a month. Funny how when you don't eat it all the time you stop thinking about it. Low and behold after a year 190! Then I added 30 minutes of some type of activity on my non climbing days. Push-ups,sit-ups short hikes. Stepped off the scale this morning at 175.
I know how good you must feel mentally and physically. I've found the biggest problem with this lifestyle is buying new clothes. Also kind of fun looking in the mirror and being the guy from the "AFTER" photo. I was the guy for too long in the "BEFORE" picture. Lost my dad when he was 54 years old, overweight and out of shape. Looking froward to the two of us conversing on the forum for many years to come. Wishing you a Happy and Healthy Year!

Congrats ! No easy way to get rid of excess fat. That damn Methadone caused me to gain 60 pounds in 6 months last year....But between the heart attack....sick all the time now etc. Ive stopped eating again and lost close to 50...if I could just get to 200 pounds I would be happy....I use to be almost 6'4 but now ive shrunk to 6'1
