OMG…How much the Rolex forum has changed over the years

At this time of year I always feel a little older and great sense of melancholy. For my final post of 2016 I’d like to ask, can any anyone else recall when the Rolex Forum used to be the most helpful and welcoming watch forum online? I have so many fond memories of lively discussions both historic and technical. Most of all I remember the great advice shared freely and a great sense of community.

I guess even the Rolex Forum has to change with the times, although I still can not believe that my plea for help in the vintage forum has been live for a month and viewed 227 times without a single reply.

I can't help you on your vintage thread, i believe you have a case to relocate the thread to the general forum though since it hasn't had any traction in vintage.

As for the change in the forum, you have a few years on me so I don't know how it was way back in '11, but I've found the forum in the past few years to be mostly welcoming and the most informative I've seen across several watch and non-watch forums. I've also felt a fairly strong sense of community. I've even had some "real world" friendships stemming from the forum.

I was not here in 2011 but I think the forum remains a friendly and helpful place for the most part. Have you bumped your vintage thread at all?

While I feel for the most part it remains the same.
There are more members that are maybe too quick to flame a fellow member, that seems to be a sign of the times in social media

I am a newby, who quickly pledged because I quickly felt a sense of community that you speak about. It turned out to be that when the community cameo my aid recently while purchasing a DJ from my AD. Your forum rocks!

I haven't seen much change on this forum. I do, however, remember when Timezone.com had only one (extremely good) Rolex forum and light moderation.

While I think this forum is very helpful and for the most part friendly, I do believe there are many rude remarks that really have no reason to be posted. It seems to be the case in all social media at this point so I really can't blame the forum.

We all have different levels of knowledge and being on the forum means we are all trying to increase our knowledge so I see no reason to insult others that might not be as well versed in the subject.

I scrolled through the first 3 pages in the Vintage forum and didn't see his post. From what I've noticed, posts don't get many views once they're past page 3 or 4. Just like in the for sale section, it needs to be bumped back to the top. Or he could reach out directly to long time members here that do have a wealth of knowledge like Padi.

personally, I think he is just a little bit sour grapes because he has not gotten a response to something:

while post count means little to nothing, "so many fond memories of lively discussions" that apparently he did not contribute to with all 86 of his posts.

But yes, you are correct, it most definitely needs to get bumped up if he wants a response.

I don't believe the forum have changed but the vintage Rolex market have since 2011. I guess many don't want to give
advise what to buy because they don't really know the answer.

Then when adult people ask what to buy, I never answer because only the buyer knows what he want and it's sad if
he just buy what someone else told him.

Which watch has the best value=I'm most likely buying as an investment. Watches aren't investments. Buy and wear what you like. If it goes up in value over the years, that's just a bonus.

Not all, but a large majority of people that ask this type of question are buying a watch as an "investment." We have seen it here time and time again which is most likely why the OP didn't get responses. IMO, that's a silly reason to buy a watch. I made that mistake once and won't do it again.

Once upon a time, owning and wearing a Rolex bore a different sort of connotation. Though they were always expensive (in comparison to other watch brands), a Rolex was simply a well-made, well-designed, 'go anywhere' timepiece. As time passed, the overall perception of Rolexes (along with BMWs, designer leather goods/fashion labels, nouveau cuisine/wineries etc.) changed dramatically due to emerging upscale attitudes. Call it the curse of a yuppie-inspired mentality. For some reason, this 'mentality' seems to have been passed on to countless Millennials by their upwardly-mobile (and now aging Baby Boomer) parents. At one time, the 'in-between generation' (Gen-X) appeared to have blown-off this material-oriented thought process but many of them are now getting sucked into the status-seeking label mindset as they approach their middle-aged years and beyond (from grunge/flannel shirts to ceramic Daytonas).

So it come as no surprise that many individuals are now seeking 'investment advice' on various Rolex models. While absurd at best, to them it is a legitimate concern. Rolexes now come with an ROI target on their backs (no pun intended).
